Vancouver – The Family Coalition Party (FCP) of British Columbia got off to a good start with a fundraising dinner on September 4 with dinner on September 4 with the former B.C. Premier Bill Vander Zalm as guest speaker.

Although the former Premier said he would not abandon the Social Credit Party, he nevertheless endorsed Kathleen Toth, a FCP candidate in the Victoria riding of Oak Bay, running against the Social Credit candidate there.

The dinner was attended by 150 people at $30 a plate.  Mr. Vander Zalm’s presence ensured much needed provincial and national coverage.  The FCP/BC was founded on in June of this year.

Seven candidates

At last report, the part has nominated at least seven candidates ( out of a possible 75): Tom Ausseneeg (North Saanich-The Islands); Dr. Augustine Cunningham (Parksville); Dorothy Folk (Fort St. John); Kathleen Toth (Oak Bay-Gordon Head); John O’Flynn (Vancouver Kensington); Barry Norman (Langley); Paul Formby (North Delta).

The election has been called for October 17.

Meanwhile, Campaign Life Coalition – BC has circulated the new traditional questionnaire to all candidates of all the parties to find out where they stand on abortion, on Planned Parenthood, the abortion counseling agency, and the pro-abortion B.C. Teachers’ Federation.

Caledonia – FCP Ontario is also active.  FCP leader Don Pennell has been nominated for the Brant-Haldimand by-election.  The riding became vacant at the end of July, 1991, with the resignation of Liberal Bob Nixon from the Ontario Legislature.  The government must call an election within six months of the resignation.

In 1989, the Ontario Family Coalition Party fielded 68 candidates (out of 130) and received 112,000 votes, making it the biggest Ontario party behind the three main parties.

Mr. Pennell sought an early nomination (he was the second candidate nominated) to get a head start in this large riding.  The party intends to put in a good effort.
