It was an historic election with many significant developments for the pro-life cause. For the first time since the present abortion law came into effect in 1969, to be publicly pro-life was a political asset for candidates. Indeed, to be seen as not being pro-life was politically damaging.

In some ridings the pro-life vote was the deciding factor. John Oostrom (PC Willowdale) defeated popular Liberal candidate Jim Peterson (brother of Ontario Liberal Leader, David Peterson). Pro-life supporters worked hard both for Mr. Oostrom’s nomination and his election. And, not incidentally, Mr. Oostrom advertised in the Interim. He won by 429 votes.

On the downside, however, two courageous pro-life Liberals, Garnet Bloomfield (London-Middlesex) and Dr. Stan Hudecki (Hamilton West) were defeated. During the Charter of Rights debate in November 1981, they were the only Liberals who voted against their own party because it did not protect the right to life of the unborn.

The “bottom line” for pro-lifers in this election is that 42 committed pro-life candidates won seats in this parliament. (This does not include many candidates who favour tightening the law or pro-life members from the Province of Quebec). You encouraged and supported them during the election; they need that same encouragement and support during the next five years. Help them to help the unborn by way of letters, phone calls and personal visits.

Congratulations to the pro-life candidates who were elected and to the pro-lifers who helped elect them.

Congratulations to all who cast a vote for life by supporting a pro-life candidate or marked their ballots, “No pro-life Liberal (N.D.P., P.C.).” You were the real winners in this election.
