The importance of accessing abortion stats

This morning we posted a press release from a blogger who is challenging in court the government's suppression of abortion information. Faye Sonier of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada has written an article about this and notes: In January 2012, the Ontario government quietly passed an amendment to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. As a result of the [...]

Blogger takes Ontario government to court over suppression of abortion information

We reprint below a press release from Patricia Maloney of the Run with Life blog. Last year we published a story on this issue, "Ontario hides abortion statistics."   For Immediate Release Blogger Takes Ontario Government to Court over Suppression of Information OTTAWA , July 18, 2013– “In January 2012, the Ontario Liberal government amended its freedom of information law to exempt [...]

A Toronto Indy post on a pro-life website?

Our columnist Rick McGinnis has blogged extensively about the Toronto Honda Indy and while that might not be something most of our readers care about, this should be: It was Sunday morning and I needed to get to mass, but as I was covering the Indy races all weekend, it looked like there wouldn't be time. Luckily, I'd noticed signs all over [...]

Defending feminism (that is, the right kind of feminism)

In the midst of writing about the language of discussing abortion, I found an article on The Atlantic that caught my eye. Christina Hoff Sommers, an author and former philosophy professor who is probably best known for her 1995 book Who Stole Feminism?, offers another critique of the modern feminist movement. Only 23 percent of women and 16 percent of men are willing to [...]

Is it possible to never be a human fetus?

Originally, today's blog post was going to examine the tendencies of some radical feminists to insist that abortion should be universally celebrated, instead of reluctantly embraced. However, I've read a number of articles recently that refute this idea, and I'm not sure I have anything new or enlightening to add to the conversation.  Instead, I would like to highlight a paper written by [...]

On abortion, U.S. more permissive than Europe

Do American liberals consider Europe wrong and extreme on abortion? Consider what Jon A. Shields says at The Weekly Standard blog: The American left loves Western European democracies for their cultural sensibilities and for their policies on everything from crime to health care. One policy area where you won’t hear American liberals cite the European example, though, is abortion. The reason is simple: [...]

Abortion limits by state

The Washington Post has a chart of the states and limits on abortion, including at which point abortion is "prohibited" as well as ultrasound and counseling requirements, treating abortuaries the same as other surgical facilities, and  the availability of taxpayer funding. I would like to see a similar list produced by a pro-life group that provides the asterisks  for the limits (rape, incest, [...]

Wisconsin abortion supporters try to thwart democracy & pro-life

The  Associated Press reports that the Wisconsin legislature passed Sonya's Law, a bill that requires women seeking abortions to have an ultrasound and requires doctors that do abortions at private facilities to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. Governor Scott Walker has signed the bill into law. Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union filed suit immediately seeking a restraining order to [...]

#stand4life tweetfest in support of Texas pro-life bill

Dr. Susan Berry at Breitbart: Just as the pro-life movement used Twitter to force coverage of convicted murderer and abortionist Kermit Gosnell, supporters of the bill to increase abortion safety standards in Texas will conduct a  "tweetfest" on Tuesday.  The focus of the campaign will be to demonstrate that state Sen. Wendy Davis (D), who filibustered the bill last week, speaks neither for [...]

Canadians to be slightly freer with demise of Section 13

Earlier this week the Senate voted to pass Brian Storseth's C-304, an act to repeal Section 13 of the Human Rights Act. I'll let Brian Lilley of Sun News explain why this matters: This is the bill that repeals the dreaded section 13 of the human rights act. That’s the soon-to-be former law that made it an offence to post something online [...]

Politicians use family for pro-abortion ends

There appears to be a new trend among today's politicians and other influential figures: to use one's family members as a reason or prop to support Planned Parenthood. Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and former U.S. president Bill Clinton, is the latest to do so. At the Women Deliver conference, which took place in Malaysia May [...]

Is the pro-life view racist?

Lately, I've been contemplating the extremes pro-life advocates will go to in order to spread our message, and whether those actions are honourable. What about those who oppose our work? We are no strangers to outlandish claims and ad hominem attacks – we've been called “fanatics,” manipulative, and much worse.  I hesitate to say anything truly “new” has been added to the list [...]

Interim appeal for funds

We had an appeal in the June Interim asking readers to support the paper by helping fund our summer intern program. Please consider giving and to give generously. Taylor Hyatt, who has been blogging here at Soconvivium in recent weeks, is one of the students working for us this summer. Your donation is an investment in not just pro-life journalism of The [...]

Legal prostitution leads to increased trafficking

The Supreme Court of Canada is hearing a case on prostitution. Last year we reported on the Ontario Court of Appeal decision overturning the Criminal Code prohibitions against prostitution. One of the arguments made for legalizing prostitution in Canada (and in other jurisdictions) is that it reduces illegal human trafficking. Erik Voeten of the Monkey Cage blog notes new research that debunks [...]
