As 2009 draws to a close, we look back at the various gay pride events that took place in major cities across the country and the government, community and corporate sponsors who helped make them happen. From west to east …
In Victoria, Vancity Pride 2009 had as a platinum sponsor Sleeman brewery. Silver sponsors included Mike’s Hard Lemonade and Okanagan Premium Cider, while Coca Cola served as a bronze sponsor.
Vancouver Pride featured as a gold sponsor Bud Light, as a silver sponsor Koodoo mobile, as bronze sponsors eBay.ca and Pepsi and media sponsors the 24 Hours newspaper, CBC, Shaw, CTV and the Metro newspaper. An official supplier was Zipcar and “special thanks” were extended to Costco and Safeway.
Edmonton Pride Week’s “Age of Aqueerius” had as rainbow sponsors TD Canada Trust, Vue Weekly and the Edmonton Arts Council. Orange sponsors included the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, yellow sponsors the Alberta Union of Public Employees and Planet Organic Market and blue sponsors Seagram Coolers, the Alberta Federation of Labour and the Alberta Liberal caucus. “Friends of Pride” were Mayor Stephen Mandel and Labatt’s.
Pride Calgary’s sponsors included the Metro newspaper.
The Saskatoon Pride Festival had as a gold sponsor the Star-Phoenix newspaper, while funders included Canadian Heritage, Sask Culture, Saskatchewan Lotteries, the Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange Society, Saskatchewan Festivals and Events and the City of Saskatoon.
Winnipeg Pride had as a presenting sponsor Siku Glacier Ice Vodka.
The Windsor Pride Festival had as media sponsors AM800 CKLW, 93.9 The River, the Windsor Star, TVCOGECO and Metrotimes. Diamond sponsors included the Government of Ontario, Caesars Windsor and COGECO Cable, while platinum sponsors had on their list VIA Rail Canada and silver sponsors CAW Local 444. A “Friend of Pride” was Transit Windsor, while a “Patron of Pride” was Scotiabank.
Pride London had as a platinum sponsor Rogers TV, as silver sponsors VIA Rail Canada and TD Canada Trust and as bronze sponsors Labatt, the City of London and Radisson Hotels and Resorts. Political support was provided by Councillors Cheryl Miller, Bernie MacDonald, Stephen Orser, Roger Caranci, Bill Armstrong and Susan Eagle, as well as Controllers Tom Gosnell, Bud Polhill and Gina Barber.
The Hamilton Pride Festival had as its premier sponsor Cameron’s Brewing Co., while partners included the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the City of Hamilton.
Pride Week Toronto had as public funders the Government of Canada and the City of Toronto. Premier sponsors included TD Canada Trust and Bud Light, official sponsors took in Procter and Gamble Canada, Yellow Tail, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp., Pepsi, VIA Rail Canada and the Cheetah energy drink and contributing sponsors included York University, CubeIt, Pizza Pizza, Homesense, Winners, Rogers, Virgin Mobile and Smile Fx. Media sponsors included CTV, CP 24, Metro and the Toronto Star.
Capital Pride Ottawa had as a presenting sponsor Knowledge Circle language training, as rainbow sponsors the City of Ottawa and Woody’s Vodka Cooler, as a gold sponsor the Ontario Public Service Employees Union and as a bronze sponsor the University of Ottawa Residence. Media sponsors included the Metro newspaper and Hot 89.9 radio. In-Kind sponsors were Budget Rent-a-Car and VIA Rail Canada.
Divers Cite in Montreal had as partners the Government of Canada, the Province of Quebec, the City of Montreal and Montreal Tourism, as associated sponsors Lotto Quebec and Belle Gueule beer, as a participating sponsor Lasalle College and as an international sponsor Air Canada. Official suppliers included the Dark Dog energy drink and Eska Water, while contributors included Archambault and media partners took in Le Devoir, 24 Hours, CBC, MusiMax, Nuevo Mundo television; Energie 94.3 radio and The Q 92.5 radio.
Pride at Memorial University of Newfoundland boasted partners the MUN Students Union and the MUN Graduate Students Union, as well as “Patrons in Pride” MUN Student Affairs and Services, the MUN Office of Student Recruitment, the MUN Bookstore, Molson Canada and Grey Fudge.
Halifax Pride’s sponsors included Festival Antigonish and Car Share Halifax.
