The findings of a recent study conducted by the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal show an increase in the number of unborn children killed due to advanced methods of prenatal screening. A story appearing in a recent issue of The Medical Post quoted Dr. Surindra Maraj, a doctor at the hospital and a co- author of the study: “We knew ultrasound screening for severe defects has increased the termination of pregnancy rate” he said, also noting that these enhanced techniques also detect “more of the anomalies that don’t necessitate a termination.”

While one benefit of these improvements is that some ailments which are highly treatable immediately after birth can be remedied, taken in sum, these advancements have increased the number of afflicted children which are pre-emptively ‘terminated’ rather than medically treated.
