The major opponent to government funding for REAL Women is the National Action Committee on the Status of Women, which claims to represent three million women in various organizations ranging from the Communist Women of Canada to the PC Women’s Caucus. (This news comes as a shock to most PC women). The NAC magazine, Feminist Action, reported that at their last Annual General Meeting “most of the workshop discussion focused on ways of countering the anti-feminist attacks of REAL Women.”
At the same NAC AGM, delegates welcomed a new member group, the Canadian Organization for the rights of Prostitutes, CORP. they marked their welcome with a controversial emergency resolution, calling for the repeal of Bill C-49 and committing NAC to opposing “all and any legislation which seeks to limit the choices in the business and personal lives of adult prostitutes including procuring, pimping and bawdy house laws.”
The delegates resolved that NAC “recognizes the crucial role of prostitutes in establishing and carrying out their priorities as they struggle for empowerment in their working environment.”
When it’s a case of “birds of a feather flying together” REAL Women should fell honoured and grateful that NAC spurns them. Women who belong to organizations for women – church groups, university clubs, political groups etc. – might like to find out whether they too are allied with NAC in their attacks on REAL Women and their welcome and support of the Canadian Organization for the Rights of Prostitutes, CORP.
