Interim staff
In March, The Interim reported that Canadian Tire financially supported the making of a gay television program that would propagandize for same-sex “marriage.” After being inundated with calls, faxes and e-mails from patrons and local franchise owners, the company clarified its position in terms of corporate support for an up-coming Global television special, My Fabulous Gay Wedding.
Susan Rogers, senior vice-president of corporate affairs, told LifeSiteNews.com that the news articles run by LifeSite on the company’s sponsorship of the series – and on which The Interim’s story was based – was “completely accurate based on the information that you had been provided” at the time by Canadian Tire. She added, however, that the information being provided by Canadian Tire’s customer service representatives “was propagating a falsehood.”
Rogers clarified that the company allowed the producers of the series use of canadian Tire’s facilities to shoot a segment of their program, but that no funding or advertising was given. She said the company will be “much more diligent in the future” in its consideration of requests to film on its premises.
Rogers concluded that, “Canadian Tire takes no position on the definition of family. We consider that a decision best left to Canadian society as a whole.”
Pro-family groups have indicated they believe Canadian Tire is telling the truth, and that it was poor communications on its part that led to the erroneous perception it was providing financial support to My Fabulous Gay Wedding. In the words of one activist, “There is no reason to rip up our Canadian Tire credit cards.”
