Pentecostal assemblies of Canada

TorontoThe executive officers of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada and their assistants have unanimously decided to meet together for one hour each week on an indefinite basis for prayer, confession and intercession.  They will give top priority to seeking the face of God on behalf of Canada and the world as the primary step entering the process of Decade of Destiny, the central emphasis for the 1990s.

They realize that Canada in particular is heading for ruin.  Not only are the souls of millions of Canadians in eternal jeopardy, but biblical ethics, traditional family values, as well as fundamental freedoms are at stake.  They invite Christians everywhere to join in this urgent vigil of prayer.

Missionary Alliance of Canada

Abortion is “the greatest moral disaster of our age,” according to Dr. Melvin Sylvester, president of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada.  The growing evangelical denomination has sent its official statement “Abortion, An Alliance Response”, to all members of the new parliament.

The church contends that abortion is the product of “the current social climate of moral relativism and sexual permissiveness.”  In that context, states the booklet, abortions are being routinely performed “for purposes of convenience.”

The Christian and Missionary Alliance of Canada is composed of 306 congregations in nine provinces and the Northwest Territories.

New Jersey bishops extend support to Operation Rescue

The Most Reverend Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Newark has released a joint statement by the Catholic Bishops in the State of New Jersey concerning the protection of the unborn:

“The Catholic Bishops of the State of New Jersey express their solidarity with all those who choose to defend the rights of the unborn, including those who participate in public demonstrations.  We reject the extraordinary punitive actions being taken against members of Operation Rescue and call on all members of our society to join in this rejection.  We esteem the courage of those who have chosen jail as a means of bringing the plight of the unborn to everyone’s attention.  We reject violence as an instrument in the pursuit of any goal, however worthy.  We also deplore the harsh sentences imposed by courts that tend to inhibit the exercise of Constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion, the right to free speech and the right of free association.

“We recall in the not too distant past the effective demonstrations and sit-ins protesting the denial of civil rights to black citizens of our country.  They helped to reduce injustice and bigotry.  Surely the killing of an unborn child is the ultimate denial of basic human and civil rights.  Imposition of undue fines, conditions and sentences and the invoking of the Racketeering Influenced Act (RICO) are dangerous acts against people who have chosen to exercise their constitutional rights and who are examples of selfless courage and personal sacrifice.  They ask only that the destruction of human life be halted; they wish only to speak out against injustice.  The Bishops of New Jersey join with all those fighting for the rights of the unborn.  We call on every citizen and every legislator to join in protecting the rights of the unborn and the rights of those with the courage to speak against the destruction of human life.

“As a State and a Nation we have the tradition of being life-giving people.  We have the resources to offer alternatives to destruction of life.  We must fine a place in our minds, hearts and homes for the unborn.  We must also protect the rights of those decrying destruction of the unborn.

“We pray that God will continue to give strength and courage to those who testify to the sanctity of human life.  We thank God that there are people willing to sacrifice themselves for the innocent, unborn children.”

Cardinal O’Connor

Earlier, on January 22, 1989, Cardinal O’Connor of New York published a long statement in support of Operation Rescue and all other activities intended to save lives.  Entitled “To save Lives…” the Cardinal stated with respect to Operation Rescue,

“…I want to make clear my admiration and respect for those who sacrifice so much on behalf of the unborn and their mothers, in response to the demands of their own consciences.  I am particularly impressed that Operation Rescue has attracted participants of all ages, including many young people.  They may well turn the thinking of our country around.”
