Interim StaffMorten Rostrup, president of Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), has said the Vatican was responsible for spreading AIDS “by not supporting the use of condoms and not advocating the use of condoms as one of the preventative measures.” He added, “I would say that the Catholic church is helping the spread of a deadly disease.”

On Nov. 30, the Vatican released a five-page document marking World AIDS Day, which called on governments and non-governmental organizations to fight AIDS with policies that respect human dignity. “Promote campaigns to sensitize and educate people (about HIV/AIDS), based not on policies which feed immoral and hedonistic ways of life” but with policies in which “the virtue of chastity is manifested as the most important and effective prevention in fighting HIV/AIDS.”

Rostrup said, “Condoms are one of the best ways of preventing the disease … to advocate against the use of condoms as a preventative measure … is totally unacceptable from a moral, ethical and medical perspective.”
