Two days before hundreds of thousands of pro-lifers marched in Washington D.C. during the annual March for Life to mark the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, President Barack Obama released a statement reaffirming his support for  the 1973 Supreme Court decision. He said Roe, “protects women’s health and reproductive freedom, and affirms a fundamental principle: that government should not intrude on private family matters” He added, “I am committed to protecting this constitutional right.”

He repeated his often stated lines about supporting pregnant women and reducing unwanted pregnancy, but encouraged Americans to ensure “our daughters have the same rights, the same freedoms, and the same opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams.”

Meanwhile at the March, Rep. Chris Smith (R, N.J.) told the crowd that pro-lifers “know the only thing the multibillion dollar abortion industry produces is victims and that women deserve better than abortion.”
