In July of 1983 the lead editorial in Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, stated, “We can no longer base our ethics on the idea that human beings are a special form of creation, made in the image of God singled out from all other animals, and alone possessing an immortal soul”.
Last year in the United States, one and a half million babies were aborted. (One every twenty seconds.) One in four pregnancies in the United States now ends in abortion.
Clearly, the sanctity of human life ethic is under attack. With this in mind the Christian Action Council in the U.S. is calling churches to stand together on January 22nd, 1984 by participating in Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. The Christian Action Council has prepared material to equip individuals and churches to participate in this important communal action. They are offering: Planning Helps, Posters, Worship Manual, Bulletin, Inserts, Public Service Announcements, etc.
Sanctity of Life Sunday will be followed by the eleventh annual March for Life on Monday, January 23rd, 1984 in order to lobby on Capitol Hill.
The march will be in front of the Supreme Court this year since the court has ruled that demonstrations on the sidewalk are permitted. It is no coincidence that the Sanctity of Life Sunday and the March for Life Sunday and the March for Life are scheduled to occur in the anniversary of Roe v. Wade – the 1973 Supreme Court Decision that permitted abortion on demand. Indeed, last June the Supreme Court re-affirmed that Decision.
At this crucial time in the American struggle, Canadian prayers are more urgently needed.
