On the evening of March 18 approximately one hundred people gathered at St. Michaels college School in Toronto to bid farewell to Father Lawrence Abello. The event, which was sponsored by Campaign Life, was also a final opportunity to hear Father Abello speak. He has now returned to Calcutta, India where he is carrying out his work as a Jesuit missionary.
His engaging talk was followed by a stimulating question period. Father Abello focused on the need for a renewed commitment to Christian values and the pro-life cause. “My prayer for all,” he said, “is that you do not succumb to the natural tendency to be desensitized to the magnitude of evil you are encountering.”
Following the talk, farewell messages were passed on to Father Abello from as far away as British Columbia. In his commitment to the pro-life cause, Father Abello has traveled throughout Canada and the United States lecturing on the evils of abortion and working directly with various pro-life groups. Since coming to Toronto in the spring of 1985, his contribution to Campaign Life has been invaluable. To those who have had the privilege of working directly with him, he will be remembered as a tireless and persistent defender of the unborn child.
He will be truly missed.
