Canada’s oldest and largest anti-pornography group has changed its name.

Canadians for Decency is now registered as CASE – Canadians Addressing Sexual Exploitation.

Its president, Dolina Smith, said, “We knew we had to find a name that better described our focus and expertise. The name also had to be easily accepted by the public, media and similar minded associations. The name had to be positive and not sideline us as a narrow-minded, insignificant organization.”

From its small beginnings around a kitchen table in North York in 1974, Canadians for Decency has no expanded into a national organization distributing about 5,000 newsletters per issue.

In 1993, Canadians for Decency helped pass the child pornography law. In 1996 it funded in part the anti-porn comic Watch Out! by Anita Oliveira, as a tool for reaching the largest users of porn, 12 to 17 year-old boys.

Since 1989 CASE has sponsored The White Ribbon Against Pornography Campaign (WRAP). CASE networks with about a hundred other anti-porn groups across the country which have been given permission to use WRAP’s trade-marked logo and participate in the WRAP campaign.

CASE offers resources to local groups and lets these groups keep monies raised through WRAP in local hands.

CASE is completely volunteers and run on a shoestring budget- under $7,000 in 1996.

On February 5 and 6, CASE hosted Tonya Flynt-Vega, the daughter of Larry Flynt, the publisher of Hustler. Flynt-Vega has become an anti-porn crusader and is speaking out about her life with her father.
