Dawkins and Hitchens

Interim contributor Harley Price's blog Priceton is worth visiting regularly. His latest post is entitled, "The Atheist Delusion: How the Religion of Progressive Thinking Poisons Everything, Part One." A sample of Price's essay on Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens: The real subject of Dawkins' and Hitchens' books is indeed their own moral and intellectual superiority, and the sneering contempt that they and [...]

Priorities

Liberal MP Keith Martin notes: "Today is World Sight Day. Inexpensive prevention and treatment interventions can save the sight of millions." Of course, if provincial medical budgets and foreign aid weren't wasted on abortion, the money could be used to fight blindness. Government does not have finite resources, so governments should carefully choose its priorities.

5 pro-life students arrested in Ottawa

Five students taking part in a Genocide Awareness Project were arrested yesterday at Carleton University in Ottawa for showing graphic images of aborted babies and comparing the slaughter in the womb to other atrocities such as the Holocaust and slavery. This might not be everyone's cup of tea, but certainly such speech and expression should be permitted on the university campus? But [...]

The failure of safe sex

The Ottawa Citizen reports that Ottawa figures show the number of cases of chlamydia jumped to 2,023 in 2009 from 1,328 in 2005, an increase of 52 per cent. There were 217 cases of gonorrhea in Ottawa in 2009 compared to 154 in 2005, an increase of 41 per cent. The number of syphilis cases more than doubled to 51 in 2009 [...]

Don’t stop the presses: LA Times endorses pro-abort

The Los Angeles Times endorsed pro-abortion Democrat Barbara Boxer over semi pro-life Republican Carly Fiorina, and the abortion and same-sex marriage issues loom large: Boxer supports California's ban on assault weapons and the revival of a similar law at the federal level. Fiorina has criticized the federal law's definition of assault weapons as "extremely arbitrary" and emphasizes other ways of combating gun [...]

Tuns on TV

I'll be on Behind the Story on CTS Saturday evening (6 pm in Ontario, 8 pm in Alberta). It is replayed on Sunday morning and, I think, Sunday evening at 7 pm. You can also watch online after it has been broadcast. We will be talking about prostitution, the Maclean's cover story on Quebec corruption, David Frum and the conservative movement, and women [...]

Continuing the discussion on prostitution

The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada responds to Justice Susan Himel's decision to throw out Canada's restrictions on prostitution. Don Hutchinson, vice-president and general legal counsel for the EFC, said: “This is an opportunity for the Government of Canada to take strong action that will affirm the value and dignity of all Canadian women. It is a defining moment in which they can affirm [...]

Prostitution: safer but not safe

The Globe and Mail has a thorough (if biased) story on the Ontario Superior Court's decision which makes the three restrictions on prostitution unenforceable in Ontario. Their editorial slams Justice Susan Himel for deciding this issue on her own: "An Ontario judge had no business striking down three major anti-prostitution laws in the Criminal Code on Tuesday." The paper says Parliament should weigh the [...]

Update: prostitution in Canada

The Globe and Mail coverage of Judge Susan Himel's Ontario Superior Court's decision on prostitution is much better than CP's. All three provisions of the Criminal Code's restrictions on prostitution have been thrown out. And the GM also reports what is likely to happen next: the Crown will ask to stay the decision until the Supreme Court can hear the appeal. Security [...]

Breaking: prostitution in Canada

This Canadian Press article is mostly useless. It states that, "An Ontario court has struck down key provisions of Canada's anti-prostitution laws, saying they contribute to the danger faced by sex-trade workers." It is not exactly clear what provisions the Ontario Superior Court has invalidated, but according to CP three "sex-trade workers" argued against Criminal Code "prohibitions on keeping a common bawdy [...]

Keith Martin’s priorities

Keith Martin, who helped lead the Liberal crusade to include abortion in the government's maternal health initiative earlier this year -- a Liberal plan to export abortion to the mothers of the developing world -- is urging people to get behind a campaign to help save the rhino. Of course, this isn't the first time he has demonstrated a preference for animals over [...]

Courageous candidates

Allan Tam is a candidate for public school trustee in York Region District School Board. John Del Grande is a trustee on the Toronto Separate School Board who is seeking re-election. Both are deserving of victory as both are running against the Ontario Ministry of Education's equity program.  See the LifeSiteNews story. Campaign Life Coalition explains the dangers of that program.
