The annual March for Life, which took place in May, was undoubtedly the most successful we have had so far. According to LifeSite News, it attracted more participants than ever before, with almost 6,000 attending the march on the Hill. But, perhaps the even better news is that it wasmostly made up of youth, who represented 60-70 per cent of the participants. A pro-life Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Basilica before the march. The chief celebrant was Ottawa Archbishop Marcel Gervais, assisted by Peterborough Bishop Nicola DeAngelis, Slovak Bishop John Pazak and dozens of priests. Archbishop Gervais encouraged the overflow crowd to “provide an alternative to the culture of death.” On Wednesday evening, a candlelight vigil was held at the National Human Rights Monument, which attracted the media and a small, but rowdy, group of pro-abortion protesters. On Thursday evening, over 500 guests attended the Rose Dinner. The key addresses were delivered by Quebec Cardinal Marc Ouellet and Carl Anderson. Mr. Anderson, who is the international leader of the million-plus member Knights of Columbus, came from New Haven for the occasion. Both addresses were eloquent and inspiring. There are many other encouraging facts I could mention about the March for Life. But, as space is limited, I think the most impressive thing I can do is to give some quotations from the young people who attended. A LifeSite representative interviewed quite a number of the high school students and received very impressive replies. I shall give as many quotations as space will allow. “I went to the Walk for Life ignorant and therefore, relatively unconcerned about abortions. But, after listening to the speakers speak with such fervour and conviction, I now find it impossible to sit by and watch as thousands of innocent babies are massacred every year.” Liam T. From Elaine S. from Holy Name of Mary Girls High School in Mississauga, Ont., 16 young ladies from HNM attended the march. “These last few days have been awesome. The march was great …. Before the conference, I never actually realized how unfair and cruel people can be. In Ottawa, I learned many new things and became more aware.” “I thought it was a good opportunity to defend my faith. Seeing so many people present to protest the murders of innocent children was overwhelming and inspiring. It is an experience I shall always remember.” Peter T. “This was such a great experience. I came here being pro-life, but not really knowing the facts. Now, on my way home, I will spread the word and give more support for the march in many years to come.” Brittany M. “It was a life-changing experience participating in the march and seeing the pictures of the aborted babies.” Zack H. “This was my third year participating in the March for Life and I feel each year, it gets better. The past two years, I came to the march with not very much knowledge or conviction for this issue. However, this year I really opened up and felt truly inspired by the thousands of people at the march, as well as the amazing speakers at the conference. I really enjoyed it and leave with so much more knowledge and passion for this important issue.” Melissa V. |
