Spain on slippery slope
Spain’s socialist government got Parliament approval for legalized abortions on October 6. According to a report in the Globe & Mail, abortion was legalized for cases involving rape, malformation of the unborn baby or danger to the mother’s life.
The law, approved by 186 to 109 votes, was sent to the Senate for ratification.
The main opposition party, the Popular Alliance, is challenging the law. They will appeal to the Constitutional Court – Spain’s highest – on the grounds that it infringes the right to life.
If the Court grants leave for this appeal, the act would be frozen and implementation could be delayed until the middle of next year.
