OttawaThe latest step towards the perversion of public morality and public law was taken by Canada’s federal Human Rights Commission.  On April 13, 1989, it ruled that homosexual Brian Mossop has the right to bereavement leave to attend the funeral of his male lover’s father.

The chairman of the Ontario Human Rights commission, Raj Anand, especially appointed by Attorney General Ian Scott to more vigorously pursue “rights” for the sodomite “lifestyle”. Welcomed the decision.  The ruling, said Anand, may also “gay spouses” to get all sorts of family benefits such as family allowance cheques, dental plan coverage and pensions.

Catholics exhorted

OttawaThe sixteen bishops of the Permanent Council of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has invited every Catholic Bishop in Canada to ask the people of his diocese to push for Parliament to give priority to new abortion legislation.

The bishops are asked to urge Catholics to contact their local members of Parliament to press them to vote for a new law against abortion that would effectively protect the life of the unborn child from conception to birth.  It is also suggested that similar messages be sent to the Prime Minister and Cabinet members.

FrederictonNew Brunswick’s opposition to funding Morgentaler abortions collapsed on April 14.  Two months earlier the Liberal government of Joe McKenzie had provided a lackluster opposition to the Morgentaler demands for payment.  Legal arguments were ill prepared and ill thought out.

On April 14 Judge Ronald Stevenson noted that no order-in-council had been passed to give force to the provincial government’s abortion policy.  This policy allows abortions but only pays for them if two doctors certify that they are medically necessary.  Hence, he concluded, New Brunswick has no policy and, therefore, cannot refuse payment for abortions done outside the province.

Until now Premier McKenna has had little to fear from pro-lifers in his province despite the efforts of a few hard workers.  In the past most people have been apathetic, mistaking politicians’ words and promises for deeds.
