On January 21, 1983, a remarkable debate took place between Dr. Bernard Nathanson, a former abortionist from New York, and Henry Morgentaler, a Montreal abortionist. The debate took place on the Hamilton T.V. station CHCH and was viewed by many thousands.
Dr. Nathanson was the founder of the pro-abortion organization in the U.S., the National Association for the Repeal of the Abortion Laws (NARAL). He also presided over more than 70,000 abortions in the U.S. in his capacity as director of the largest abortion clinic in the western world. He subsequently was appointed director of the Fetology Unit at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in New York and in that capacity began to study the unborn child and as a result became revolted by abortion.
The slogans, tactics and strategies, however, developed by Dr. Nathanson and his cohorts in the mid-60’s have been picked up and applied by pro-abortionists throughout the western world, including Canada.
This made the debate between Nathanson and Morgentaler somewhat amusing in that when Morgentaler began to spiel off the usual slogans and statistics, Dr. Nathanson sighed and reminded Morgentaler that it was he (Nathanson) and his friends that came up with those statements and that they were all meaningless-the only purpose of them being to mislead and misrepresent the facts to the public.
The programme also showed Morgentaler in his true light, namely, that of a professional abortionist drumming up business for a very unsavory practice for a very high financial return. Like any salesman, Morgentaler extolled the virtues of his product (abortion) urging women to step right up and get one, carefully evading the true facts i.e., the profound moral issue involved in killing of human life as well as the very real physical, emotional and social implications to women undergoing the procedure.
The debate was, in short, a debate between a cool professional expert and a frequently hysterical, erratic and uninformed abortionist out to make money-lots of money.
