Citizens of Langley and surrounding areas gathered at the Langley Memorial Hospital recently to draw attention to the Clark government’s appointment of Vancouver doctor Tom Ward as public administrator.
This follows Premier Glen Clark’s dissolution of the Langley Memorial Hospital Society and the Hospital Board by Order in Council March 26.
As public administrator, Ward holds sweeping authority, with the “exclusive right, in consultation with the Ministry of Health, to exercise all of the powers of the society, the board and the members of the society.”
Ward replaces the 2,700 members of the society, which registered at 99.5 per cent vote against amalgamation in the NDP government’s latest attempt at the regionalization of health care.
“Langley wants it to be open and accountable for the services it provides,” said society member John Hof.
The issue highlights the government’s efforts to exert greater control over all aspects of health care, including abortion service.
