David Peterson’s proposed Sunday shopping legislation was given second reading by Ontario MPPs on June 29, 1988.  Eight weeks of public hearings begin in August.

The legislation will give municipalities responsibility for Sunday store hours.  Tories, NDPers and most other people are convinced that the local option clause is a Liberal party subterfuge, since in reality it will lead to wide open Sunday shopping.  Sunday work for many people will follow shortly.  The price of consumer goods will then go up 15 per cent, as it did in Alberta.  Family life will have been dealt another blow.
