Paul Tuns:

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith appeared on the podcast of Shaun Newman in which she called for Alberta’s population to grow to 10 million inhabitants through immigration, leading Prolife Alberta to take issue with the government’s silence over the death of 12,000 preborn babies annually.

In her interview with Newman, Smith said she wanted to more than double Alberta’s population from 4.7 million today to more than 10 million by 2050. She said, “Let’s have an aggressive target to double our population” and “People are going to want to come here, and we have to embrace them, and we want to build this place out.” The interview was from January but not posted online until August.

Smith said that Alberta would be a destination for both migrants within Canada and immigrants from around the world.

Prolife Alberta sent an email to supporters stating, “Premier Smith wants to get Alberta’s population to 10 million through increased immigration so we ‘can be taken seriously by the feds’,” continuing “And what does Danielle Smith have to say about the killing of almost 12,000 unborn children that happen every year in this province? Crickets.”

The email to Prolife Alberta supporters stated, ““like Justin Trudeau,” appears to “disregard the sanctity of life while championing mass immigration.” It continued: “Premier Smith’s recent declaration that she aims to double Alberta’s population through aggressive immigration targets raises a critical question: What kind of Alberta are we building if we ignore the sanctity of life?”

The email from Prolife Alberta said, “it is not enough to aim for population growth, we must also ensure that we are creating a society that values every life, from conception onward.”

“Every year,” Prolife Alberta pointed out, “nearly 12,000 innocent lives are ended in this province through abortion. Yet, when it comes to addressing this atrocity, Premier Smith is conspicuously absent. Her silence on this matter is not just disappointing; it’s a betrayal of the very values that many Albertans hold dear.”

The pro-life group criticized the province’s policies that pay for all abortions, permit minors to have abortions without parental notification, the prescription of “dangerous chemical abortion pills” over the phone or online with minimal medical supervision, and outlaw pro-life speech near abortion facilities due to the anti-free speech bubble zone enacted by the previous NDP government that subsequent United Conservative Party governments of Jason Kenney and Danielle Smith have left untouched.

“Each one of these points falls squarely within provincial jurisdiction,” Prolife Alberta noted, adding, “Yet for all her talk about sticking up for Alberta against Ottawa, Danielle Smith has been deafeningly silent on abortion … By failing to stand up for the unborn, Smith is allowing this tragedy to continue unabated, leaving those who cannot defend themselves to fend for themselves.”
