Rep. Bark Stupak (D, Mich) was interviewed by LifeSiteNews.com about pro-life amendments to various Congressional health care reform bills. He noted:
“The majority of Americans do not want to see public funding for abortion, and when it comes down to a vote most members will vote that way, if given an opportunity.”
“If given an opportunity,” is an important qualifier and thus far the Congressional leadership has fought very hard to prevent an honest vote by the whole of the House of Representatives on the issue of federal funding abortion or a federal mandate to force private insurance companies to cover the procedure. Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Charmaine Yoest of Americans United for Life recently addressed the issue of the Hyde Amendment and what it will take to prevent a political slight of hand to permit public funding of abortion — precisely what Stupak and other Congressional pro-lifers are arguing for: a ironclad amendment explicitly preventing such funding or mandates.
Is the White House and Democratic Congressional leadership really prepared to lose health care reform over the issue of abortion?
