C.A. Scharfe, Editor-in-chief of The Interim is led away from the Morgentaler abortuary after being arrested along with Lorraine Carbonneau for blocking the entrance by sitting on the steps.
On January 8, two pro-lifers staged a sit-in on the front steps of the Morgentaler abortuary. C.A. Scharfe, Editor-in-chief of The Interim and Lorraine Carbonneau of North Bay, Ontario, a mother with three children and a worker at a home for the battered women, were both arrested by Metro Toronto Police shortly after they blocked the entrance of the Morgentaler abortion clinic and refused to move when requested — first by Morgentaler’s security guard and then by the police.
Mr. Scharfe was asked by the security guard if he realized he was breaking the law. He replied that if Morgentaler could break the law, so could he.
Toronto Star reporter, Bill Walker (who is writing a book on Morgentaler) asked Mr. Scharfe for his name.
The police then removed the two protesters forcibly from the steps and took them around to the rear of the abortuary where they were notified of their rights and placed in a police van. They were then joined by two policemen. The policemen were polite but firm and warned the two that if they attempted to sit-in again, they would be held in jail for the day, and, should they try a third time, they would be held until they could go before a judge.
The two protestors were issued $53 fines for trespassing and released, they went back to join the picketers in front of the abortuary to find three policemen standing in front of the abortuary steps.
