Doctors vs. M-312

Campaign Life Coalition's Matthew Wojciechowski addresses the news that the Canadian Medical Association has urged defeat of M-312. He says, "A 'medical association' doesn’t want to debate 'medical and scientific evidence' on something that is so central to their profession; human life." That's because the CMA is fully committed to legal abortion, and has been for a long-time. What is interesting is [...]

Melinda Gates: if you have to call it uncontroversial, it is controversial

We have coverage of Melinda Gates promoting birth control for the developing world and insisting it is uncontroversial in the August Interim. The irony is that Gates would not have to repeatedly call contraception uncontroversial if it weren't already controversial. She sees it as substantively different from abortion, but that doesn't mean it is not without issues (many contraceptives are abortifacient, her [...]

Helen Gurley Brown, RIP

Helen Gurley Brown, the famous former editor of Cosmopolitan, has passed away at the age of 90. As the Wall Street Journal reported, "Cosmo, as it was called, became the sex and style bible of single girls worldwide." Donald DeMarco wrote about HGB in The Interim in April 2003. DeMarco wrote: Helen Gurley Brown enjoys needlepoint and stitching hip slogans onto pillows. [...]

Upcoming Ontario pro-life conferences

Campaign Life Coalition is hosting a series of smaller pro-life conferences in three Ontario cities this Fall: Kitchener (September 15), Ajax (September 22), and Sudbury (October 13). Details and registration forms are available here. Each event is $25 including lunch and is held on a single day. It is inexpensive and convenient. Paul Tuns, editor of The Interim, will be speaking at the Kitchener Pro-Life Forum on "Why a small pro-life paper will outlast [...]

Democrats sidestep ‘hot-button’ social issues

Politico reports on Democratic National Convention planning documents that they've seen and how Barack Obama's party is planning to highlight the so-called "hot-button" issues like gay rights, abortion, Planned Parenthood funding, and immigration. Politico reports: The most innovative — and harshest — element of the preliminary program is a nightly “social contrast” in which two people describe their personal experience with a hot-button [...]

Harper hypocrisy on using science

I was going to make this point but Campaign Life Coalition's Matthew Wojciechowski beat me to it: Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he will follow the science only when its convenient. Here's Harper on the Northern Gateway pipeline:  “The only way that governments can handle controversial projects of this manner is to ensure that things are evaluated on an independent basis scientifically, and [...]

Labels used to end debate

We have a column online entitled "Labels used to shut down debate" that looks at how terms like "racist" and "homophobic" (one might add "sexist") are used to end debate on contentious issues. Author Pauline Kosalka concludes: Dismissing different points of view, especially holding “traditional” views, is the easy and cowardly way to avoid engaging in a serious debate about morals and [...]

Not all abortionists are racist

Wesley Smith: The pro life movement often argues that abortion rights is a racist agenda because of the disproportionate number of minority babies terminated.  I don’t agree with that argument, actually.  I don’t think that most pro choice activists are racist or that abortionists do what they do for racially discrminatory reasons. But there are exceptions ... The video of an abortionist [...]

Planned Parenthood’s dishonest campaign for government funding

Actress Elizabeth Banks is plumping for Barack Obama and Planned Parenthood. The Hill reports on a pro-Obama ad featuring the actress, in which the star of Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Role Models and What to Expect When Expecting says: "So for that little 5 percent that Mitt Romney decides he doesn't agree with, he's going to take away cancer screenings? What [...]

Survey of Canadian pro-life groups re: gestational limits

Last week I commented on our editorial questioning the wisdom of gestational limits. In the post from last Thursday, I noted: We are not working against those who are promoting gestational limits; we are trying to persuade them and the larger pro-life movement that there are better ways of advancing the cause of life. Disagreement should not be viewed as seditious to [...]

Labels used to shut down debate

Pauline KosalkaCommentary In the days leading up to the Euro 2012 soccer tournament in June, the focus of headlines was not so much on which team would win, but on what was deemed to be intense racism on the part of the fans from Poland and Ukraine, the hosts of the tournament. Both countries have a predominantly Christian and ethnically homogenous population. [...]

Pro-abort violence vs. pro-lifers

One of our August stories, "Increase pro-abortion violence against pro-lifers" is now online. It begins: Over the past three months, pro-life activists have been physically assaulted by abortion supporters, a sign, pro-lifers say, that their message is hitting a nerve. The story features chocolate milk.

Chick-fil-A #win

The Newseum's top ten newspaper covers today are on Chick-fil-A. (HT: Michelle Malkin) The Washington Post reported customer support for the restaurant made for brisk business and Rick Warren tweeted "#ChickfilA has already set a world record today." A quick perusal of the internet will find long lines of customers in stores and drive-throughs. It was pretty obviously a good day to be a Chick-fil-A [...]

Gestational limits are unwise

The cover feature of the August Interim is on gestational limits. We surveyed pro-life leaders and groups and asked if they supported incrementalism (which can be a good thing) and specifically gestational limits (which we think are a bad idea). That survey will appear online shortly. Today we've posed a special editorial that we ran alongside the survey in the paper's centerspread, as [...]
