Euthanasia

Why a media spectacle fizzled

Last minute change of heart saves Erwin Krickhahn Erwin Krickhahn and John Hofess say that Krickhahn’s public suicide was called off because of the media’s dishonesty and hypocrisy; the media’s explanation is somewhat different.  The following is the story, as reported in the three Toronto daily newspapers, over a period of just over a month. October 9 The Globe and Mail publishes [...]

Rose & Thorn

Rose: Christian Heritage Party For being the only officially pro-life party in this election. In many ridings, the CHP was the only choice for those who wanted to vote in good conscience. 30,000 Canadians voted for the party in over 50 ridings. A special rose to Ken Willis of Lambton-Middlesex who managed to defeat the NDP candidate in his riding and finish [...]

Disaster narrowly avoided by decision

What the Supreme Court said about life and death in the Sue Rodriguez case The pro-life movement in Canada breathed a collective sigh of relief on Thursday, September 30, when the Supreme Court of Canada upheld the Criminal Code prohibition against aiding or abetting a suicide.  It would be foolhardy, however, to assume that this judgement has settled permanently the push to [...]

Canadian physicians grapple with the issue of euthanasia

An increasing number of Canadian doctors are receiving requests to with-hold life-support systems or provide active euthanasia, the Canadian Medical Association reports. However, most doctors, according to the CMA survey, agree that better palliative care would reduce the requests for euthanasia or assisted suicide. In a survey released at a meeting of Canadian doctors in Calgary recently, 34 per cent reported receiving [...]

THE MONTH IN REVIEW

PUT JACK IN JAIL It took 17 deaths before a Michigan prosecutor finally decided to charge Jack Kevorkian of assisting in a suicide.  Kevorkian has clearly broken the law and should serve the four years in prison but it does not seem likely he will serve any time.  Kevorkian’s lawyer Geoffrey Fieger has publicly dared prosecutors to charge his client and appears [...]

ALS patient displayed heroism in life and death

Roy Slater died August 14, naturally and with dignity. His life and his death stand in direct contradiction to those who would terminate the lives of people like him. Slater suffered from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) which was diagnosed in 1981.  At the time he was given 15 months to live.  He proved the experts wrong, however, living for another 12 years [...]

Pulling the plug on euthanasia

As this issue of The Interim went to press, news came in of the Canadian Medical Association’s annual meeting, where a discussion on euthanasia took place and a new survey on doctors’ attitudes to the practice was released.  To pro-life eyes, perhaps the most shocking result of the survey was the way in which the media distorted survey findings.  Our report of [...]

EUTHANASIA: Death on Parliament’s doorstep

Text from a speech given in Vancouver by pro-life MP, Don Boudria Before I begin to talk to you about what we are fighting for, let me take a moment to tell you who and what I am not fighting against.  I know that there are many people who endure physical and mental pain when they are terminally ill.  One such person [...]

Living will fiasco ends in tragedy

Mary Jo’s friends now ask why the hospital staff made no effort to revive her and, even after discovering their error, still left her to die such an agonizingly slow death. The tragic but avoidable death of a Yakima, Washington, woman has raised a number of serious questions on the advisability of signing a living will. In late December 1992, the staff [...]

Top court hears Rodriguez

The case of Sue Rodriguez, a British Columbia woman seeking a legal physician-assisted suicide, was heard before the Supreme Court of Canada on May 20.  Following the televised hearing the Court reserved judgment, but is expected to respond quickly in consideration of Ms. Rodriguez’s deteriorating health. You were asking

If suicide is not a crime why is there a fuss when a handicapped or ill person wants to kill himself? L.B. Toronto. For centuries suicide was a crime and anyone who survived an attempted suicide faced  severe penalties. Today, it is realized that suicide is “a cry for help” and the criminal penalties have been removed out of compassion for the [...]

Producer pays price for intimidation

A pro-life witness who complained that she was intimidated by a CBC producer has been vindicated by a House of Commons Committee who found the producer to be “over-zealous.” The Standing Committee on House Management investigated the complaint following a question of privilege raised in the House of Commons by pro-life MP Don Boudria. The case involves the testimony of Cheryl Eckstein [...]

B.C. Court of Appeal upholds law against assisted suicide

The pro-euthanasia movement suffered another legal defeat on March 8, when the B.C. Court of Appeal ruled 2-1 that Sue Rodriguez does not have a right to physician-assisted suicide. All three judges agreed that S.241 of the Criminal Code, which prohibits aiding or abetting a suicide, should be enforced, and all three said firmly that the debate over euthanasia should be settled [...]
