The Interim went to press days before the April 28 federal election and whatever the results, there does not appear to be much good news for pro-lifers. As we report on page 10, the Conservatives and Liberals are both committed to the abortion and euthanasia status quo which kills more than 100,000 preborn children and 15,000 vulnerable patients annually. It is a scandal that none of the five largest parties will challenge this death cult. Perhaps though there might be a cross-party coalition of sanity that could begin to rethink some of the excesses of the Trudeau years on issues of life, family, and faith. Here is an agenda that such a coalition might support:
- Rejecting the House Finance Committee recommendation to remove promotion of religion as a charitable goal, thus stripping churches of their charitable tax status, as well as rejecting its recommendation to deny charitable tax status to pro-life groups. These punitive measures that must be repudiated.
- Permanently rescinding the expansion of euthanasia and doctor-assisted suicide to patients suffering solely from mental illness, which is scheduled to be enacted in March 2027.
- The creation of an oversight agency to ensure that Medical Assistance in Dying regulations are being followed, with the power to recommend criminal investigations when health care professionals may be breaking the law.
- Direction to Statistics Canada and the Ministry of Health to maintain in-depth records of abortion and euthanasia so researchers and policymakers can better understand who is accessing such procedures, why, and what, if any, complications follow.
- Adequate funding of palliative care to ensure that patients do not feel like they must choose death because of insufficient end-of-life care.
- Elimination of the Trudeau-era foreign aid funding of abortion abroad; this form of ideological colonialism must end.
Such as agenda would scale back, ever-so-slightly, the pro-abortion, pro-euthanasia, anti-family, and anti-Christian bias of the Trudeau government.
