You can hire a hit man in a Toronto park this summer.
On Sunday August 10, I went for a swim at the Alex Duff Memorial swimming pool in the Toronto park commonly known as Christie Pits. Climbing out of the water I began to watch an organized children’s baseball game through the wire mesh safety fence surrounding the elevated pool when, just beyond the children’s baseball diamond, something caught my eye. A large white trailer was parked beside the public washrooms with a sign painted on it in blue-black lower-case lettering, which said “birth control and VD information” and a phone number.
I called the next day and asked if they could arrange an abortion for my “girlfriend”. I was told that would be no problem. A follow-up call provided the following information:
- That the Birth Control Centre (funded by the city of Toronto) would refer my “girlfriend” to a doctor who, for $40.00 and no questions asked would write a letter to a hospital committee that would provide her with a hospital abortion within two weeks providing she was less than 12 weeks pregnant.
- A free “test for infection” would be provided by the Centre.
- The abortion would be paid for by OHIP.
- No reason is necessary for the abortion, “you don’t need one.” The caller was informed the only requirement was that “you have to want it.”
- When asked what the doctor’s letter would say we were informed that it says only “your age, how pregnant you are and that you wish to have an abortion.”

- The Birth Control Centre admitted that it was “not entirely legal what they (the abortion clinics) are doing in Canada but suggested one could go there although abortions performed were not covered by OHIP and cost at least $275,00 (after 12 weeks, more) and that “a lot of people go there who are too late to go to the hospitals.”
Contrary to what the Center’s spokesperson said, a reason is required in order to obtain an abortion legally in Canada. Section 251 of the Criminal Code makes it legal to have an abortion only if the pregnancy is a threat to the mother’s life or health.
Is it not a most violent sign of the times that, this summer, publicly funded information and assistance is available in a Toronto park to plan and prepare to murder – in cold blood – an unborn child? Who needs muggers, rapists and child killers with a parks department that promotes body snatching of the living unborn?
