Montreal. Henry Morgentaler announced on May 9 that he would campaign in the next Quebec election if anti-abortion groups try to force political parties to make abortions more difficult to obtain. Abortion laws have not been enforced since 1976 when the Parti Quebecois formed the government.

In August 1984, during the federal election campaign, Morgentaler endorsed the NDP as the party to vote for. Recently, during the May 2 election campaign, Morgentaler stated that Liberal Leader David Peterson would “live to regret” a campaign promise to close his abortuary. “There is a strong pro-choice movement in Ontario, “he said, “I hope they punish him.”

On election day, Liberal popular support shot up to 36% of the vote while the NDP, which supported Morgentaler-style abortuaries, increased only slightly.

A Campaign Life analysis of April 30 showed that of 217 PC and Liberal Ontario candidates canvassed, the vast majority, that is 82.5 percent, publicly declared themselves opposed to abortion on demand and abortion clinics in the province.
