The National Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia, is well known for its use of selective data on the abortion issue. The Center is operated by hard-line pro-abortionists and as expected, its data over the years has been highly slanted, in favor of the pro-abortion cause. For example, the Center recently reviewed selective data from institutions that are under strict medical control and then presented this to the medical profession and the public as a true picture on abortion-related risks – in effect, deluding the public into thinking that abortion is risk free – which it definitely is not. The recent death of four women in a Miami abortion clinic has certainly shown in the clearest possible way that the abortion procedure is far from being risk-free.

However, even using selective data, the Center was unable to hide the fact that the number of abortions in the U.S has risen dramatically since the 1973 Supreme Court decision striking down any protection for the unborn child.

According to the National Center for Disease Control, nearly 1.3 million abortions were performed in the U.S in 1980, the latest year for which figures are available. That number amounted to slightly more than one abortion for every three live births, the Center said.

These figures, as frightening as they are, do not appear to tell the true story. Privately operated abortion clinics in the U.S. simply do not release accurate abortion statistics for several reasons. One reason is that the clinics do not wish to pay income tax on their profits and choose to report far less abortions than are actually taking place. Also, these clinics do not report many of their complications since they do not want their clinics to get “bad” reputations and therefore be investigated by the medical authorities and perhaps closed down.

Even so, the carefully laundered 1.3 million legal abortions is a devastating indictment. It certainly indicates that when abortion is widely available, abortion becomes another method of birth control and the future of a nation is being lost to entrepreneurs and doctors operating the abortion clinics at great profit.
