A motion endorsing the support of abortion clinics was tabled at the May 26-28 annual convention of Ontario C.U.P.E, in Niagara Falls.

The motion was tabled (shelved) on the grounds that it was controversial and divisive at a time when a united stand in the union is needed.

The first vote saw the motion tabled. However, further argument tried to “lift it from the table”. A second, counted, vote confirmed the table with 166 for, 148 against. Once tabled, a motion cannot be debated until the next convention.

It would seem there is more than one way to skin a cat. Pro-lifers in the union were pretty certain a full debate and vote would have seen the motion carried and C.U.P.E. would have come out in favor of abortion clinics.
