Bill C-43 is stalled in the Senate.  Meetings of the Senate Committee studying the Bill have been called and then postponed indefinitely, and while Campaign Life Coalition was asked to appear in mid-December, there is no guarantee that the routine postponements will not continue.

There is no consensus on the eventual fate of this new abortion legislation in the Senate.  While some MPs and Senators believe the Bill will be defeated at the final vote, an equal number believe it will pass.  A third scenario would see the government letting the Bill die without a vote.  The bottom line appears to be that no one knows, or those who do aren’t talking.

Justice Minister Kim Campbell is having a more and more difficult time selling the Bill, even to herself.  Despite a 10-page “keep up business as usual” letter to Canada’s physicians, Campbell admits she would not be unduly upset if the Bill dies.
