Earlier this week, CNN reported that Senator Ben Nelson (D, Neb.) was willing to settle for language that falls far short of the Stupak-Pitts amendment in the Senate version of health care reform. Jill Stanek is reporting that Democrats for Life tells us that Nelson and Senator Bob Casey Jr. (D, Penn.) will not settle for anything less than Stupak, because “both … are committed to removing abortion funding.” I hope that D4L president Kristen Day is correct, but I have my doubts. Nelson and Casey could both be “committed” to trying to remove abortion funding but still support something less. They may also be duped into believing that the non-limiting phony restrictions in the Baucus Bill are sufficient. This warrants close scrutiny.
