Family Facts is a great new one-stop resource for statistics and studies on family issues from the Heritage Foundation. I’ve been lost in it for hours already.
Professor Moynihan is calling: 40% of babies are born to unwed mothers and fewer than 70% of children are living with two-parents although that number is brought down by the 39.4% figure for blacks in the United States. This, of course, matters to how children will do later in life. Children from intact families are more likely to delay sexual activity and say no to drugs.
It is avery good site with charts, reports and videos. I rediscovered this important 2006 “Backgrounder” by Patrick Fagan: “Why Religion Matters Even More: The Impact of Religious Practice on Social Stability.” Fagan provides copious evidence for this claim: “No other dimension of life in America-with the exception of stable marriages and families, which in turn are strongly tied to religious practice-does more to promote the well-being and soundness of the nation’s civil society than citizens’ religious observance.” The entire Family Facts website demonstrates the truth of Fagan’s bold statement.
