The Toronto Star reports that the status of women committee called upon the federal government to ante up $1.4 billion for maternal health and demanded that monies be provided for abortion to be part of the initiative. The Star reports:

But the Conservative members of the status of women committee calling for the all-inclusive spending were conspicuously absent from the announcement today.

The committee chair, Liberal MP Hedy Fry, says the Conservatives did not explain why they wouldn’t send anyone to the announcement.

Is an explanation really needed? Why would they be part of an opposition publicity stunt designed to embarrass the Conservative government? Why would they call for abortion funding as part of maternal health when these Conservative MPs voted against the Liberal motion calling for same in March?
