Government partially caves on maternal health

Campaign Life Coalition’s CLC National News publication was all ready for layout, with a story that praised the Conservatives for holding firm on keeping any facet of “reproductive health” out of the government’s signature policy to improve maternal and infant health in the developing world. On March 17, Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon informed the foreign affairs committee that the [...]

Liberal pro-abortion motion defeated 144-138

On March 23, as The Interim went to press, Canada’s opposition parties sought to require the Conservative government to fund abortion as part of their maternal and child health initiative at the G8 summit this June. Liberal foreign affairs critic Bob Rae tabled a motion that would require “the maternal and child health initiative for the world’s poorest regions” to “include the [...]

Canadians ‘decisively’ pro-choice

An Ekos poll released today trumpets that Canadians are "decisively" pro-choice. On the rather straight-forward question of "Thinking about your general views on abortion, would you say you are more pro-life or pro-choice." I consider that a non-leading question and yet it allows for ambiguity. It says nothing about policy or restrictions. Indeed, other polls show a majority of Canadians to be "pro-choice" but [...]

Demographics is slow motion destiny

I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine who is on a committee to save an elementary school (our childhood elementary school) from being closed by the school board. There are simply not enough students to warrant keeping it open, so the board is adjusting school zones to justify boarding up St. Rita's and sending its dwindling population to two [...]

Stop all-day kindergarten

Check out the website Parental Choice that opposes full-day kindergarten which is just universal daycare in disguise. Not a lot at the website right now but sign up for updates. Full-day kindergarten for four- and five-year-olds is too costly and totally unnecessary.

Social cost of pornography

I'm thinking of dealing with the topic of pornography in an upcoming issue of The Interim, but it is difficult to address the subject without delving into details that cannot be comfortably discussed in a family publication. Any way, the Witherspoon Institute has a book and excellent website dedicated to the issue of social costs of pornography that is worth examining. The website has some papers and all [...]

Throng of pro-lifers swamp Washington

An estimated 200,000-400,000 people took part in the Washington March for Life on Jan. 22 to commemorate the 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Organizers say it was larger than the record 2009 crowd. This year’s theme was “Stand Up Now! Unite for the Life Principles. No Exception! No Compromise!” and the pro-life witness urged an end to the slaughter [...]

Some announcements

I have two announcements about our roster of columnists, a new one and one who is leaving. Over the Christmas holidays, Rev. Royal Hamel resigned as a columnist. He is focusing on other opportunities and projects. I am saddened to see him leave, but am glad that we part amicably. I consider Rev. Hamel a friend and it has been my pleasure [...]

Civility despite controversy

At the end of January, the pro-life clubs at the University of Toronto and Queen’s University each hosted a guest speaker that came with a reputation for sparking some controversy. Jose Ruba from the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform (CCBR) presented his “Echoes of the Holocaust” presentation at U of T on Jan. 27. The following day, Michael Coren, broadcaster, [...]

Lakehead Life Support obtains club status

After more than three years of gaining and losing club status, the pro-life club at Lakehead University, Life Support, seems to have its club status to stay. The most recent episode of its saga occurred during this past fall school term. The club was accused of verbally harassing a female student at its display booth. Life Support responded immediately when [...]

Human Rights Watch chastises Ireland over pro-life laws

A new report by Human Rights Watch claims that Ireland’s anti-abortion regulations are in violation of international law. According to the report, “A State of Isolation: Access to Abortion for Women in Ireland,” released on January 28, “Ireland is a party to several international human rights treaties, and has been repeatedly criticized by international treaty bodies for implementing abortion restrictions that are [...]
