Abortion causes harm beyond the killing of the unborn

While pro-lifers are rightly concerned primarily about abortion because it takes the life of an innocent human being in its earliest and most vulnerable stages, it has also long been clear that abortion harms women and society, too. The victims of abortion, those that pay a price for the easy destruction of the unborn through abortion-on-demand, go far beyond the womb. Multiple [...]

Vancouver euthanasia symposium attracts international speakers

The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition’s third annual International Symposium on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide was held in Vancouver, June 3-4 and organizer Alex Schadenberg called it an “incredible success” that “exceeded expectations.”   The conference was entitled “Celebrating our successes; preparing for new challenges,” and to that end Schadenberg, executive director of the EPC, brought together speakers from Australia, Canada, Netherlands, [...]

Kevorkian dead at 83

On June 3, euthanasia advocate and convicted murderer Jack Kevorkian passed away naturally in Royal Oak, Michigan after being hospitalized for difficulties connected to pneumonia and kidney problems. His death occasioned laudatory obituaries in the media that ignored the man’s ghoulish history. The Detroit News and Washington Post compared him to civil rights heroes, fighting for what the News euphemistically referred [...]

What happened to all the pro-life Liberals?

When Tom Wappel was first elected to Parliament in 1988, he recalls that 40 per cent or more of the Liberal caucus was pro-life, or held traditional values.   But by the time he left federal politics and retired as MP for Scarborough Southwest in 2008, he was one of the last remaining pro-life MPs in caucus. The same year, [...]

Ottawa mayor attacked for declaring ‘Respect for Life Day’

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson paradoxically rushed to affirm his belief in the “right to choose” only hours after declaring an honorary day of recognition for the unborn’s right to life in Canada. As thousands of pro-lifers gathered on Parliament Hill May 12 to demand protections for Canada’s unborn, the mayor of Canada’s capital city is facing controversy over his declaration that May [...]

Bits & Pieces

Canada According to an Abacus Data Inc. poll, 52 per cent of Canadians say “we shouldn’t be afraid to debate” abortion, that 49 per cent think abortion should not be fully covered at taxpayer expense, and only 22 per cent support the status quo of abortion permitted through all nine months without limit. While 27 per cent say human life should be [...]

Two academics warn about daycare

Large-scale daycare centres and programs do not appear to be improving the educational outcomes of children. Economics professor Pierre Lefebvre of the Université du Québec à Montréal conducted research between 1994 and 2006 on children under five from Quebec and the rest of Canada that showed Quebec’s heavily-subsidized provincial daycare system, which costs parents just $7 per day, is not advancing children’s [...]

Assisted-suicide ban challenged

The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association filed a lawsuit challenging Canada’s ban on assisted suicide. The suit was filed in the province’s Supreme Court on April 26 on behalf of Lee and Hollis Johnson. The couple took Lee’s mother, 89-year-old Kay Carter, to Switzerland in January 2010 to have her killed by lethal injection, a crime that is punishable in Canada by [...]

Swiss voters reject assisted suicide ban

Swiss voters rejected a proposal to ban assisted suicide and suicide tourism in the Canton (political district) of Zurich. In a referendum on May 15, about 85 per cent of voters in Zurich rejected a proposal to end legalized assisted suicide while about 78 per cent rejected a separate proposal to stop the practice of suicide tourism by foreigners in their Canton. [...]

Anti-Christian punk band receives taxpayer funds

The federally funded Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings (FACTOR)  has drawn criticism over its financial support  of a punk album that features anti-Christian artwork. Canadian punk group Living with Lions’ new album, titled “Holy S**t,” features cover art that looks like a Bible, is subtitled “The Poo Testament,” and depicts Christ as excrement. Black Box Recordings, Inc. received $13,248 from FACTOR. [...]

Green candidate brags about abortion

A Green Party candidate in the recent federal election said he was glad that his unborn child was aborted. According to the Terrace Standard, Roger Benham, running in the riding of Skeena-Bulkley Valley in British Columbia, inarticulatedly stated during the candidates’ debate on April 20 that “I am sick to death about hearing murdering babies.” After admitting that he got a woman [...]

What to put on the cover?

The May issue could have been 32 pages or more. It was a big month for news since our last issue came out. Our beloved former columnist Fr. Ted Colleton passed away April 26. On May 2, there was transformational federal election. On May 13, Ottawa witnessed the largest-ever National March for Life, and successful regional marches were held coast-to-coast. How to [...]

Time to separate school and state

What will it take for Canadians finally to rebel against the abuse of power by Canada’s immensely wealthy and politically intimidating teachers’ unions. On May 4, about 12,000 unionized Saskatchewan teachers walked off the job in one-day protest strike against lagging contract negotiations. Students lost a day of schooling and parents were given little notice of the impending strike, yet picketing [...]

Messaging Layton

The recent federal election result was predictable -- Harper got his long sought majority -- but how it came about was totally unpredictable and astonishing. There’s an interesting side-story that isn’t getting much coverage. The left-leaning media did their level best to piggyback Ignatieff and his Liberal crew to victory but failed. When it became obvious that Plan A had failed, they [...]

Justin Bieber stands up for life

C.S. Lewis, Thomas Aquinas, Socrates, Kierkegaard, Bieber. Or something like that. Up until quite recently I haven’t regarded 16-year-old pop sensation, and little girl heartthrob, Justin Bieber as a particularly great moral philosopher and academic ethicist, but I have to admit that I think I got it terribly wrong. Jest aside, the Canadian kid who makes pre-teens weep and scream at [...]
