Board stalls on Wilberforce pamphlet

Interim Staff Metro Toronto Separate School Board officials ignored a motion passed unanimously by the school trustees and denied over 4,000 Grade 8 students the opportunity to receive the ‘Who Will Be Today’s Wilberforce?’ pamphlet. The Wilberforce pamphlet offers a startling comparison of the attitude 200 years ago towards slavery and the attitude many people have today towards abortion. The board had [...]

Faith, peer support key to perseverance

Interim staff Canadian pro-life workers increasingly rely on religious faith to overcome feelings of loneliness, isolation, persecution and lack of support, according to a recently released attitude survey. Entitled “Compassion Fatigue in the Pro-Life Movement,” the survey was prepared by Mary-Lynn McPherson, national co-ordinator of Canadian Nurses for Life. It indicates that despite a lack of support from their own churches and [...]

Spiritual focus helps prevent pro-life ‘burn-out’

I find myself taken aback by the September, 1996 article in The Interim pertaining to stress and “burn-out” with the struggle to defend preborn children. The one in question concerns a survey examining compassion fatigue. “Burn-out,” according to popular usage, means fatigue, discouragement and dismay. But in more literal definition, “burn-out” actually means a heightened form of mental fatigue and distress just [...]

Hopefuls tepid on pro-life issues

In the wake of Lyn McLeod’s decision to resign as leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, seven would be successors have emerged. One of them will be chosen leader at the party’s convention on November 30. On life and family issues, the candidates are similar; and none stands out as a strong pro-lifer, to sat the least. They do differ, however, in [...]

Hilary, Linda and ‘family values’

Two women. Both are 48 years old and both are mothers of daughter. One is wealthy. The other has forsaken earthly riches for a greater reward. One is powerful. The other has relinquished control – even over her life. Ironically, both women have given stirring speeches on similar topics over the past few weeks.
