Reform goes after pro-life vote

Officially, the pro-life movement does not endorse Reform, but, quietly many disillusioned pro-lifers will be pinning their hopes on Manning. Preston Manning considers himself staunchly pro-life.  But if the leader of the Reform Party gets elected in his Calgary riding and goes to Ottawa, the views of this pro-life politician could never see the light of day. He will be bound by [...]

Protests target French government

Opponents of RU-486 demand that its production and export be stopped Canadians marched in front of the French Embassy and consulates June 21 to proclaim they don’t want any “killer” drugs allowed in this country. The protesters said Canadians are opposed to the controversial abortion pill RU-486. “RU-486 is another example of pharmaceutical companies exploiting women for financial profit,” said John Hof, [...]

Distinct society on the wane

Quebec’s tradition of large, strong families may have ended, and the reasons for this radical change are rooted in its recent history. The shift in political, cultural and economic power which grew out of the Quiet Revolution in Quebec included a move away from the Catholic Church, which many considered complicit in the oppression of the Quebecois.  By repudiating the Church, however, [...]

A witness for all women

It has often been observed that television forced the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam.  People who saw the appalling scenes in their living rooms night after night finally said “Enough,” and forced the politicians into action.  I seldom see the evening news, so I have no idea what the film from the war in Eastern Europe has shown. Even though I [...]

Three arrested at B.C. vigil

Pro-life organizers in B.C. confirm that three demonstrators were arrested at a prayer vigil outside the Everywoman’s Abortuary in Vancouver April 30. John Hof, president of Campaign Life Coalition B.C., said none of the three were breaking an injunction at the abortion clinic when they were arrested.  He said the three people arrested were well known to the clinic staff. “We are [...]

Political exclusion

Prime Minister Kim Campbell has trumpeted that she stands for the politics of inclusion.  More Canadians, she says, must be brought into the political process. Despite the rhetoric, Campbell’s real intentions appear to be to usher in an era of political exclusion.   Above all else, she wants to exclude what she calls special interest groups and all those Canadians who support such [...]

New push for Depo Provera

A well-known abortion activist is calling for a new push to get the injectable contraceptive/abortifacients Depo Provera into Canada. Dr. Marion Powell, speaking at a forum in Toronto, said the new Prime Minister, Kim Campbell, should be approached by Canadian women to approve the drug in this country. So far, Canada leads the world in taking a cautious approach to the drug [...]

Convention leaves bitter taste

“Men must be governed by God or they will be ruled by tyrants” …William Penn Something strange happened to me on the way to the Conservative Leadership convention.  Actually the thought of attending this event never occurred to me until a few months ago.  It has been almost five years since I ran as a Tory candidate in Vancouver East.  In political [...]

Canadian abortion stats continue to rise

According to the latest Statistics Canada figures, over 95,059 abortions were performed on Canadian women in 1991.  This is an increase of almost 3,000 from 1990. The Canadian abortion rate increased to 23.6 per 100 live births in 1991 compared with 22.9 in 1990.  The figures also revealed that hospital abortions were down 1.1% from 1990 meaning that the private “clinics” picked [...]

UNICEF: Final segment of a three part series

UNICEF’s Collaborators Among the recommendations which UNICEF endorsed at a 1987 Kenya Conference were: “Community education programmes should emphasize the risks involved in pregnancy in order to ensure social support of contraceptive practice.” “This conference…calls on the sponsoring organizations to further extend their collaboration at a notional level…” Two of the sponsoring collaborators of UNICEF are perhaps less well known.  The Population [...]

Germany will not fund abortions

Germany – With a recent decision on abortion availability, the German Supreme Court has taken modest steps towards advancing the pro-life cause in Europe. In a controversial ruling on May 27, Germany’s top judges overturned a liberal abortion law which would have allowed virtual abortion on demand. Under the new legislation, abortion will remain legal up to three months or in the [...]

Geneticist battles “world-wide assault” on life

A distinguished guest slipped into the April board meeting of The Interim a few weeks ago.  He was awaiting a ride to Toronto International Airport.  Impeccably dressed in gray flannel suit, he sat with us at the board table, sipping coffee, breaking bread and joining in the discussions.  When the topic of story ideas arose, someone suggested that we do an informal [...]

It’s darkest before the dawn

Perhaps we in the pro-life movement feel that we have had quite a lot of bad news in recent months.  First, the election of an avidly pro-abortion President in the United States, with a fully supportive wife, was certainly a blow for the unborn babies of that “great” nation.  Then the shocking murder of the abortionist in Florida was used widely by [...]

PEI abortion policy under attack

“Our policy on abortion is one the government and executive council stand behind.  We don’t plan to change it.” …..Health Minister Alan Buchanan Charlottetown, PEI – On April 22, Henry Morgentaler launched a lawsuit to force the Province of Prince Edward Island to pay all associated costs for women obtaining abortions at his clinics outside of the province. Alan Buchanan, PEI’s Liberal [...]

An unrivaled smear campaign

As the abortionists and their supporters in the Ontario government seek an injunction banning pro-life activity, the media have played a very important role – and have done real damage to the pro-life movement. Media accounts of the pro-life picketing regularly portray pro-lifers as dangerous fanatics.  Abortion clinic operators have been quoted alleging that clients have been assaulted, shoved to the ground, [...]
