Pro-life essay contest for 2011/2012

There is a story in the September issue about The Interim co-sponsored Fr. Ted Essay contest. High school students can earn serious dough (first prize is $1500, with second and third prizes of $800 and $500 respectively) by writing an 800-1000 word essay on the topic of “Is there cause for pro-life optimism regarding the abortion issue in Canada?” If you know any pro-life high school students, [...]

Even progressive parents assume birds and bees are straight

Mary Elizabeth Williams praises Kate Winslet in Salon for talking about homosexuality with her young children and including the possibility of future same-sex partners. Williams says this is extremely rare, even among progressive (read: the intelligent, tolerant, good parents): You can understand how merely broaching the notion of homosexuality as something your offspring might one day know about would be anathema in a [...]

11 myths of abortion

Our September cover story is about the 11 myths of abortion, including "the fetus is just a blob of cells" and "banning abortion will lead to more back-alley abortions." Abortion depending on myths (read: lies) is the topic of our lead editorial. An excerpt: The myths we discuss enable abortion by ignoring the rudimentary facts of modern fetology, obscuring the obvious health consequences [...]

Maternity benefits for women who have abortions

LifeSiteNews.com reports that women in Canada who have an abortion qualify for maternity benefits, but fortunately not parental benefits. The Interim reported on this in 2008. As LifeSite explains: Canada’s employment insurance guidelines reveal that a woman who aborts her child after 19 weeks gestation is eligible to receive 17 weeks of maternity leave, the same as a mother who gives birth.  For [...]

Silent Scream on TV Friday night

Interim columnist and Sun News personality Michael Coren will air a segment of The Silent Scream Friday night. It is a pretty powerful video -- enough so that Planned Parenthood has a "fact" sheet criticizing it's "exaggerated concern for the fetus" and supposedly misleading imagery. Those who support "choice" have long condemned The Silent Scream -- not to be confused with the horror movie Silent [...]

Coren’s show starts tonight

Interim columnist Michael Coren has moved to Sun News and his show, The Arena, begins tonight (7-8 pm Eastern). Mark Steyn and Ann Coulter are reportedly guests on the first show. Having Coren, an entertaining and thoughtful social conservative voice, on national television is a great opportunity to normalize discussion about often taboo topics such as abortion, euthanasia, and gay rights. Please tune in. [...]

Pictures open a dialogue

In the August edition of The Interim, Campaign Life Coalition Youth director Alissa Golob wrote about her experience at the Calgary Stampede using graphic photos to start discussions about abortion with passers-by. As Golob notes: These conversations, along with many others, reinforced my position that whether it’s the Calgary Stampede or the Canada Day Parade, this pro-life initiative needs to be at the [...]

Where’s the Catholic leadership in Ontario schools?

There has been a strong effort by the provincial government since 2009 to make sure every school board approves and begins to implement the Equity and Inclusive Education (EIE) policy by September 2011. According to the government, we need this policy because, “Racism, religious intolerance, homophobia, and gender-based violence are still evident in our communities and – unfortunately – in our schools.”  But [...]

Getting to know the abortionists

If you have access to Obstetrics & Gynecology, we would love to see the article, "Abortion Provision Among Practicing Obstetrician–Gynecologists" in the September issue. From the abstract we know that the authors found: Among practicing ob-gyns, 97% encountered patients seeking abortions, whereas 14% performed them. Female physicians were more likely to provide abortions than were male (18.6% compared with 10.6%, adjusted odds [...]

Review of ‘Unnatural Selection’

Around here and in the popular media there has been much discussion about gendercide -- the "disappearance" of girls, mostly in Asia, due to abortion. The thing that started all this discussion is Mara Hvistendahl's book Unnatural Selection: Choosing Boys Over Girls, and the Consequences of a World Full of Men. I reviewed it in the August issue and it had to be [...]

Bert and Ernie and TV propaganda campaigns

As I write this, a petition asking that the producers of Sesame Street perform a gay marriage between Bert and Ernie, two beloved characters on the long-running children’s television show, has gotten over 9,000 signatures. It seems like a silly sideshow while civil wars rage in the Middle East, riots smoulder in London and the world economy continues to teeter and creak, [...]

Ontario pro-life conferences

Here's our report from the August issue of the recent Toronto Pro-Life Forum. Brian Lilley was a fantastic speaker to kick off the weekend event and the entire lineup of Saturday speakers reinforced the very positive, life-affirming message that the pro-life movement is indeed the pro-love movement. There are other regional pro-life conferences in the Fall in Ontario, including the eastern Ontario conference in Kingston on October 29 [...]

NARAL rates the GOP presidential contenders

Two of 12 declared, likely or possible Republican candidates for the party's presidential nomination are rated as too pro-life by NARAL Pro-Choice America although two have supported NARAL-backed pro-choice measures in the past (former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty). Pawlenty is very certainly pro-life who signed a few bills he shouldn't have because the bill was overall [...]

Earlier gendercide

New tests will reveal a baby's sex at seven weeks.  Ostensibly, this information can be used by parents "at risk" of passing on sex-based diseases, although even in most of those cases, the result will not be treatment of the disease but the elimination of the baby. Andrea Mrozek says this will used for target and eliminate girls babies. Indeed, everyone knows that it [...]
