At this time of year, when gift lists surround us and plans are being made to extend warm greetings and hospitality to others, it’s highly appropriate for pro-life people to add the pre-born child to the list.  Our gifts need not involve money, just thoughtfulness and time.

All three national pro-life groups – Alliance for Life, Campaign Life and Coalition for the Protection of Human Life – are asking pro-lifers to contact their MPs and urge them to support Dr. Gus Mitges’ Parliamentary Motion seeking constitutional protection for the unborn.  We would suggest readers send their MP a Christmas card, or pay him or her a visit over the holiday, asking them to support the Motion.

Mitges’ motion will be voted on in the House of Commons in the New Year.  It will be a major opportunity for the pro-life movement to scrutinize the positions taken on the abortion issue by elected federal MPs.  Let your MP know that this vote is of paramount importance to you and will colour your support at the next election.

When you plan your gift list, why not add an item of clothing for a newborn baby?  Birthright and other pregnancy help centers are always happy to receive such donations.  Your small gift will show a mother that people really do care about her and her child.

Many of us have a friend, relative or neighbour with young children whose daily chores multiply at this time of year.  An offer to baby-sit for a couple of hours is a gesture that would be warmly appreciated.

There are so many ways in which pro-lifers can extend a friendly hand to help others and show that we care.  As we meditate on the birth of the infant Jesus, let us remember in our prayers those tiny babies in the womb whose lives are in jeopardy at this moment.  Let us pray that their mothers and fathers will make the right decision.  And let us resolve that each one of us will go into the New Year more committed than ever to achieve justice for the unborn.
