Two board members of a British Columbia hospital are trying to restrict the use of the word ”health” in the Criminal Code, so as to reduce the number of abortions performed in that hospital.
The Lions Gate Hospital has one of the highest abortion rates in Canada. One abortion is performed for every two live births. This rate is three times Canada’s average.
The Attorney-General of B.C. is now attempting to have the case thrown out of court on the grounds that Carruthers and Whelton have no right to challenge the way in which abortions are being approved despite the fact that both men are members of the society.
The B.C. court has agreed with the Attorney-General so both men are appealing the decision to the B.C. Court of Appeal.
The Therapeutic Abortion Committee of Lions Gate Hospital is getting money from the provincial government to pay their lawyers. Volunteer lawyers are helping Carruthers and Whelton and they must rely on private donations to pay their legal bills. Donations can be sent to:

Stand up for life
Vancouver’s annual Stand Up for Life march on Mother’s Day was attended by as many as 4000 people. The rally, organized by Christians for Life, began with speeches and songs at Vancouver City Hall, before the crowd moved on to circle the General Hospital’s surgical day-care centre where about 4000 abortions are performed annually.
Speakers included Linda Forseth, director of the White Rock Crisis, Pregnancy Centre, Margaret Fraser, president of Christians for Life and Arla Rendle, president of the Pro-Life Society of B.C. Master of Ceremonies was the Rev. Bernice Gerard, pastor of the Fraserview Assembly who viewed the large crowd as an encouraging sign for the pro-life movement.
Arla Rendle called the unborn child “the ultimate civil rights victim of our generation.” She went on to say,” He (or she) cannot be heard, cannot be read, cannot demonstrate or parade through the streets and cannot be arrested and thrown in jail for civil disobedience. The Right to Life movement is his only voice. The Right to Life movement is the civil rights movement of this decade.”
“I want you to remember this, if you remember nothing else I’ve said today, “Mrs. Rendle continued.” The battle for life is not between pro-lifers and pro-abortionists, it is not between Henry Morgentaler and Joe Borowski, nor is it a battle between feminists and traditionalists, but rather it is the ultimate contest between justice and injustice.
“We must never forget that when we fight for life, the life we defend is not only that of the smallest child, but also that of our great nation. Nations, like men can and do die. Political theorists have written that great nations are based on justice. When justice departs, the nation dies, and we must never forget that our nation will be no exception, if we accept a system of legal pragmatism for human problems in place of justice.”
