Woe is me! The traitors betray:

with treachery have the traitors betrayed!

Isaiah 24:16

In 1969 Pierre Trudeau, John Turner and the Liberals betrayed God and country by legalizing abortion.

After twenty years of steadily deteriorating morals and equally steadily increased violence in the home and on the street, Brian Mulroney and the Progressive Conservatives have concluded that they ought to repeat the blasphemy.

Legalizing abortion is, of course, blasphemy. God alone gives life and takes it. No mere man, nor any body of men – elected or not – may usurp the right of determining who shall live and who shall die.

Included in this betrayal of God is a betrayal of reason. A nation of 26 million people, living in a nearly empty continent, approves the killing of its own offspring. It is a form of madness. In addition, it also thereby corrupts its religion, its politics, its law, its health care and its administration of justice and good order.

Legalizing abortion introduces into society the principle that the end justifies the means, that one may kill off human life innocent of any crime in order to save what is believed to be the quality of life of those more powerful.

Thus the defense of the common good is replaced by the pursuit of self-interest. What is true is supplanted, as a reason for law and action, by whatever appears useful, advantageous or convenient.

Most politicians who so betray our country believe themselves Christians. The Protestants may possibly have some excuse because of divided counsels and the false abortion teaching of such communities as the United Church and the Anglicans.

Catholic politicians, on the other hand, have no excuse whatever. For almost three decades Popes and bishops have reiterated time and time again the total unacceptability of abortion. The teaching could not have been clearer.

In supporting abortion, therefore, Catholic politicians willfully cut themselves off from Divine grace and the Church. This applies to all of them, not just on the federal scene but also on the provincial level, as in Quebec and Ontario, where many of them have voted for the funding and operating of abortuaries through state agencies.

The Catholic faithful should demand from their spiritual leaders an end to the public scandal of pro-abortion Catholics receiving communion and otherwise participating in the life of the Church as if their public sin were of no consequence whatever.

The claim of some people that abortions are being done now and that Bill C-43 or any law like it is better than no law is totally erroneous. And mistaken political opinions such as these do not in any way lessen the grave sinfulness of those who have approved the legalization of funding of abortion in the past or who are about to do so in the present.
