Political hypocrisy

BY ANDREW LAWTON Interim writer, Andrew Lawton, Laying Down the Lawton In keeping with the theme of the last four years of politics, the final weeks of Donald Trump’s presidency were needlessly eventful. A protest against the process by which Joe Biden was declared the winner of last year’s election turned into a siege on the United State Capitol, which [...]

Big tech becomes big brother

Even before the Capitol chaos, tech giants were purging conservatives BY PAUL TUNS Within 48 hours of the chaos at the Capitol on Jan. 6, Facebook and Twitter banned President Donald Trump -- the former indefinitely, the latter permanently, saying they feared the President might incite his supporters to violence ahead of the Jan. 20 inauguration of Joe Biden. Facebook, which owns the [...]

Ignoring lockdown harms?

BY JOHN CARPAY Interim writer, John Carpay, Law Matters What drives some religious leaders to ignore the harm and suffering that lockdowns are inflicting on their congregations, and on all of society? We are now 10 months into the daily and ongoing violation of our human rights and fundamental freedoms. Depending on what province you live in, it’s illegal to [...]

Number of U.S. abortion facilities declines

BY PAUL TUNS A study released by Operation Rescue in January shows that 45 abortion facilities closed or halted abortions in the United States in 2020 and that Missouri became the first “abortion-free state” as its last abortion mill, Reproductive Health Services Planned Parenthood (RHSPP) in St. Louis, has not taken appointments for abortion since September. In total, there are 706 abortion [...]

‘Those were the days’

BY PAUL TUNS Republican President Richard Nixon referred to the “silent majority” in 1969, but it was a liberal Hollywood producer who gave it voice in a sitcom that would dominate television for a half-decade in the 1970s. Norman Lear created All in the Family after hearing about, but not seeing, the British sitcom Till Death Do Us Part. The British show [...]

Fr. Van Hee’s bubble zone challenge proceeds

BY PAUL TUNS In advance of an expected hearing date this year, the Catholic Civil Rights League (CCRL) announced that it had six affidavits in support of Fr. Tony Van Hee’s constitutional challenge to Ontario’s Safe Access to Abortion Services Act, the “bubble zone” law that outlaws pro-life speech near facilities that commit abortions. Among the affidavits were ones from Christian Elia, [...]

Civil liberties group sues N.B. to pay for all abortions

BY PAUL TUNS On Jan. 6, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) filed a constitutional challenge in the Court of Queen’s Bench in Fredericton. The CCLA advised the New Brunswick government in October that they would be launching a legal challenge if it did not rescind Schedule 2(a.i) of Regulation 84-20, which does not permit the paying for non-essential services in private [...]

No evil means

No good comes from rioting. When groups become crowds, and crowds become mobs, otherwise lawful citizens are prone to confusion, agitation, and manipulation. Acts that no citizen would think to perform on his own, and crimes that an individual wouldn’t dare to commit: these are the rule rather than the exception amidst the social contagion of mass gatherings. Such pressure and influence [...]

Biden administration should investigate Planned Parenthood

By Rory Leishman Merrick Garland is well qualified to serve as Attorney General of the United States, but will he “oversee an independent department” of justice that is free from all partisan bias and outside political pressure as promised by President Joe Biden? One sure way to find out will be Garland's determination to conduct an impartial investigation into evidence compiled by the [...]

Jim Hughes remembers Joe Scheidler

By Jim Hughes “It’s young Jim” would begin any conversation with pro-life hero Joseph M. Scheidler. So, you can imagine how long I’ve known and admired him. Scheidler, Zeidler, Marx, & Willke sounds like a German law firm doesn’t it? But they are the names of some of the great U.S. pro-life leaders. Now Joe Scheidler joins Marx and Willke receiving their [...]

Argentina legalizes abortion

Paraguayan and Brazilian politicians criticize move By Interim Staff On Dec. 30, the Argentine Senate voted 38-29 to approve abortion-on-demand up to 14 weeks of pregnancy, affirming the law supported by President Alberto Fernández. One senator abstained from the vote. Earlier in the month, the Chamber of Deputies passed the bill 131-117. It was the eighth legislative attempt in the last 35 [...]

And then there was this – Jan 2021

Canada On Dec. 10, the House of Commons passed C-7, the bill that expands euthanasia to include people who are not terminally ill and those who are suffering psychological pain. On Dec. 11, the House of Commons unanimously voted to create a 9-8-8 suicide prevention hotline to replace the old 10-digit phone number. We’re not saying it’s incongruous; we’re saying it’s curious. [...]

D&P never stopped funding pro-abortion groups

Lianne Laurence Special to The Interim The Canadian bishops’ international aid organization, Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, has admitted that it never stopped funding 52 partner groups under investigation for flouting Catholic social doctrine and moral teaching, despite telling the bishops it had imposed a moratorium on financing these suspect organizations. “It is not true that Development and Peace partners [...]

A DNA error

By Josie Luetke I don’t think I can recall a single pro-choicer who opposes abortion in cases of fetal disability or deformity. Usually, that circumstance is one that, if anything, buttresses their pro-choice stance. Like rape, disability is used to convince themselves of their moral superiority for supporting abortion, despite its intrinsically distasteful nature. They simply want to spare others from suffering [...]
