Despite reports, faith lives on

Christianity is barely addressed in the information and entertainment media these days. When  acknowledged at all, it is most often treated as an object of scorn and derision. Christian faith is simply not part of life for the vast majority of those fictional characters portrayed on TV and in films. When Christian characters occasionally get written into screenplay plots, they are almost [...]

“Only He who created all life has the right to take it.”

My first reaction when I looked at the return address on the envelope was, Oh No! some   , parishioner or sister in Christ, has managed to get themselves thrown into the Vanier prison for women. Then as I read the letter, I remembered that just before Christmas when The Interim had suggested that we write to Linda Gibbons, that I had sent [...]

Conference to tackle everyday concerns

Workers on strike, students uncertain about the affordability of their education, families feeling the crunch of an increasingly hostile tax system, elderly worrying about their pensions—these are the problems which Canadians wake up to every day.  The fact that no one seems to be realistically addressing these problems only adds to the crisis. At last, a window of hope may be opening [...]

Some Nebraska Catholics may face excommunication

A Nebraska bishop has taken the unusual step of excommunicating Catholics who belong to groups favoring abortion, euthanasia or the right to dissent from official church teaching. In a March 19 statement published in The South Nebraska Register, Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of Lincoln aid Catholic participation in such groups as Planned Parenthood, the Hemlock Society and Catholics for a Free Choice is [...]

The black American community is bringing to the pro-life sphere the spiritual principles which guided Martin Luther King’s civil rights campaigns. U.S. blacks are planning their first Annual National Hour of Prayer between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on May 11, says Reg. B.C. ruling sparks flurry of activism

Activists in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Montreal challenge standing injunctions It did not take long for the fallout from a controversial B.C. ruling  to be felt across the country. In February, Justice E.J.Cronin struck down B.C. legislation which placed a bubble-zone around, abortuaries, barring pro-lifers from picketing, couselling or leafletting. Following this decision, pro-life activist Linda Gibbons challenged a similar injunction in [...]

The month in review

The federal Liberals have reinstated the controversial court-challenges program. Originally established to help minority groups fight for language rights, the program soon became a slush fund for radical feminists to dip into whenever fighting a case. **** A federal judge in Chicago has ordered the state of Illinois to resume paying for abortions for victims of rape and incest. In November, a [...]

Christmas past, present and future

Some parents deplore it, but I must admit that I enjoy the little greedfest which heralds the start of the Christmas season in our house. For weeks before the big day, the kids call from in front of the TV to show me Barbie this or Power Rangers that. Of course, Mom and Dad pooh-pooh that sort of stuff, but Santa is [...]

Can He be less than God?

Few men in history have been considered more proud and arrogant than Napoleon Bonaparte. When he declared himself emperor, he brought the pope all the way from Rome to crown him in Paris. According to tradition, as Pius VII was about to lay the crown on his head, Napoleon snapped it from his hands and crowned himself. Whether or not that episode [...]

Arguing the truth with ‘medical nonsense’ Globe and Mail article filled with inaccuracies and pseudo-science

“Wanted: accuracy in the abortion debate” was the title of Margaret Wente’s November 19 column in the Globe and Mail. The article was written in answer to an earlier one by Michael Coren (Globe and Mail, November 9) which Ms. Wente said “was riddled with errors.” In an attempt to discredit his argument, she made a number of claims: it is “medical [...]

U.S. family groups cheer election results

Sonny Bono’s election to the House of Congress was only one of the many surprises of the wild November 8 U.S. mid-term elections. Another was the landslide victory by the pro-life candidates who dominated Congressional Senate and Gubernatorial votes which all but wiped out any gains the Democrats had previously made. Just two years ago it looked like Americans had given President [...]
