John Peters sings from the heart

The pro-life message does not often translate well into modern popular culture.  Pop music, especially is often a direct contradiction of the life ethic and Christian morality. But John Peters is trying to change all that.  The musician from London Ontario admits the things he sings about are “touchy.”  He pulls no punches and tells it the way he sees it. Rock [...]

The Splendour of Truth

Pope’s 10th encyclical reaffirms moral teaching The popular notion is that the pro-life movement is predominantly Catholic and Canadian Catholics are solidly pro-life. But as experienced pro-lifers will say, both these generalities can be misleading. Many of the most active pro-lifers in the country come from other denominations or from no church at all. And if this federal election showed anything, it [...]

No, I am not a conservative

“They’re concerned about pro-life and other conservative causes.”  A simple statement which many of us might pass over in reading an article.  It is an idea which I’ve seen in the secular media and in some pro-life publications.  But, it is a phrase which is well worth pausing over.  As long as we do not see the fundamental fallacy in that statement, [...]

Ad lands priest in hot water

Father David Trosch, who made international headlines with his public statements that killing abortionists is morally justifiable, has been removed from his priestly duties. The Archbishop of Mobile Alabama, Oscar Lipscomb, announced recently that he is providing Father Trosch “with a period of prayerful reflection away from the pastoral requirements of St. John’s Parish, Magnolia Springs.” This means the priest will not [...]

Planned Parenthood under fire

U of T students fight to oust racist organization Planned Parenthood’s own history came back to haunt it as the organization narrowly survived a student-led attempt to ban it from participating in activities at the University of Toronto. The Student Administration Council voted 13-9 to continue ties with the organization which promotes birth control and is closely tied with the abortion industry. [...]

A diplomat for life

When Gilles Grondin was posted in Niger, West Africa, as Resident Representative of the United Nations, he received a worrisome telegram.  His married daughter, Marie Lou, then living in Montreal, wired “Worried about pregnancy.  Husband position insecure.”  Gilles wired back, “Best news ever.  How happy I am.  Absolutely nothing to fear.  Behind you one hundred percent.  Is that clear?  Love Papa.” Now, [...]

Saving money, not lives

The American Congress has stunned many observers by voting to continue the ban on Medicaid funding of abortion.  The vote is regarded as a defeat for President Bill Clinton who is a supporter of abortion on demand, and it came as a surprise because Congress is controlled by Democrats.  It will no doubt be seen by many as a pro-life victory. I [...]

Beware the fair-weather pro-life politician

When the editor of this paper asked me to address this question, I knew it would be presumptuous to expect all pro-lifers to agree with me.  Over the last 20 years, the purists and the pragmatists among us have had our differences, and I know that there will be as many sincere, dedicated warriors who disagree with me as there are those [...]

Mainline leaders offer little hope for pro-lifers

Since the first abortion law passed in this country in 1969, Canada has not had a pro-life federal political leader in politics.  A generation of politicians has come and gone, many of whom claimed to be pro-life, and yet we have virtually abortion on demand. And now another election approaches this fall and members of the pro-life movement ask themselves what the [...]

Welfare reform targets single mothers

The Ontario NDP government has finally decided to get tough with the province’s surging $17 billion debt.  Most recently, Premier Bob Rae has taken aim at trimming the welfare system which has long needed substantial reform. However, these latest rounds of proposed cuts have left many single parents, who depend on social assistance to care for their children, uncertain about their future. [...]

The quiet emergence of the pro-life left

Seamless Garment Network gives those who feel alienated from mainstream pro-life a place to call home A coalition of liberal groups and individuals has made a splash in the U.S. with an ad calling for a consistent life ethic. The ad, which ran in The New Republic and was sponsored by a group called the Seamless Garment Network, was signed by such [...]

Ontario injunction case opens in Jan.

Lawyers were in court recently as preliminary details regarding the proposed injunction against pro-life activity in Ontario were settled.  The Provincial Attorney General Marion Boyd has presented eight volumes of evidence which she plans to use against the 18 pro-lifers named in the lawsuit. The province is launching a lawsuit for $500,000 against the 18, and is applying for an injunction at [...]

Future leaders hit the books at Life Issues school

The pro-life movement has begun an intense education campaign to train its leaders of tomorrow. It is being billed as the most extensive program designed for the express purpose of educating pro-lifers, leaders and political activists. The correspondence course, called “Life Issues, What You Need to Know about Abortion,” was developed and is administered by Campaign Life Coalition.  Retired high school teacher [...]

HLI Seminar

Antigonish, NS – HLI’s first small-town Strategy Weekend on issues affecting life, faith and family was held here May 14-16.  It was attended by some 300 Atlantic Canadians of all ages. Audience participation following each information-packed presentation left no doubt that they felt grave concern about the social and spiritual needs of contemporary Canadian society.  A recurring theme throughout the weekend was [...]

Evangelical allies show united front

Once upon a time – if you looked very closely, you could spot a token Evangelical or two among the throngs of committed Catholics in the pro-life movement.  They could be seen off to the side, bible in hand, head bowed in fervent prayer. Now almost anywhere you look – at rallies, life chains, strategy sessions – you’ll find evangelicals fighting for [...]
