No survival without shared values

There is much talk about the values that bind Canadians together.  The 12 commissioners of the Spicer Committee claimed “to be amazed” by the similarity of values and ideals shared by Canadians. According to Toronto Star editor John Honderich, they include a widespread acceptance of diversity; the need to accommodate minorities and linguistic groups; a commitment to democratic freedoms and non-violence; a [...]

PC’s hard anti-life stand

Through a series of responses and initiatives in recent months, the Mulroney  government has made it clear that it firmly supports radical feminist organizations and has nothing but  contempt for the average Canadian woman. Collins and feminism   Before its Annual General Meeting in June, the National Action committee on the Status of Women (NAC) submitted a number of questions to Mary [...]

What goes around, comes around

It began long before the proposed euthanasia legislation was tabled by Ontario’s NDP Government on May 27 of this year.  It began before Norm Sterling of the PC Party introduced his own version of euthanasia legislation in Bills 7 and 8. When did it begin? It began when we as a society, cheapened human life-when we, forgetting or ignoring the atrocities which [...]

NDP Bans Sunday Shopping

In early June, the Ontario New Democrats introduced legislation to end the wide-open Sundays which have prevailed since the municipal option clause passed into law by the previous Liberal government was struck down. Under the new law, the municipality may still make the decision but only within a general framework which emphasizes a common pause day. It must hold a public hearing [...]

Pro-life renewal in B.C.

Pro-life activity in British Columbia is undergoing a renewal.  Two of the country’s most successful Life Chains were held in the province in May.  The Family Coalition Party has been established as a provincial party ready to fight the provincial election expected this fall.  On Saturday, June 15, Campaign Life Coalition held its most successful strategy meeting when over eighty activists from [...]

A chink or two in the Saskatchewan abortion armour

In a close vote, the Yorkton-Melville NDP Riding association, at its annual general meeting, carried a resolution calling for cessation of abortion funding.  What is interesting here is the fact that the local MP, Lorne Nystrom, once touted as a possible successor to Ed Broadbent, failed in his attempt to have the resolution defeated.  The NDP’s pro-abortion tradition has, in the past, [...]

Ontario Liberals give high priority to pro-life resolutions

At its Annual General Meeting and Policy Convention, held June 14-16 in Hamilton, the Ontario wing of the Federal Liberal Party, using a two-part vote, gave high priority to two pro-life resolutions – one on abortion and one on euthanasia.  Delegates from 99 Federal Ridings in Ontario were eligible to vote on the 120 policy statements submitted to the Policy Forum.  The [...]

Urgent need to formulate Federal Election Strategy

Speaking at the CLC Ontario Annual General Meeting in Niagara Falls, Campaign Life Coalition President Jim Hughes urged the ninety participants to discuss Federal Election Strategy in their local and regional areas.  Reminding them that the pro-life movement is a grassroots organization, Mr. Hughes said that collective input from CLC supporters across Canada was necessary if we were to reach a consensus [...]

A dangerous policy

Any time I write an article or letter about political parties or politicians I am attacked by upset pro-lifers.  I sometimes feel like the guy at parties who accidently punctures the decorative balloons.  When I give a speech which refers to the Liberals and their anti-life agenda, or to the Tories with their funding of the pro-abortionists and radical feminists, somebody always [...]

Lesbians placed in top posts

In early April, Ontario’s NDP government appointed two new members to the Metro Toronto Police Services Board, Catholic priest Massey Lombardi and social worker Laura Rowe. Rowe is a known lesbian, a mother of three, two of whom were born by means of artificial insemination (A1).   On May 1, Ontario Cabinet Minister Elaine Ziemba appointed lesbian Carmen Paquette of Vanier, a [...]

Condom controversy returns

Four years ago the issue of schools and condoms was hotly debated. Some public school boards decided to teach students not only how to use condoms but to install condom dispensers for their use.  Since they had adopted the contraceptive philosophy of the Planned Parenthood organization long before that, this move appeared quite natural to them. Parents in other public schools, however, [...]

Christian holy day under assault

On March 11, the Bay, Simpson’s and Zellers in Ontario announced that they would open on Good Friday.  “Good Friday is a big shopping day in other provinces,” said a spokesman for the stores, “so we decided to open that day and close Easter Sunday.’ The announcement indicated the growing contempt of large businesses such as the above for the religious sensibilities [...]

Civil Rights forbidden

An order in Council, designed to frustrate the efforts of picketers on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, was quietly resurrected using the Gulf War and President Bush’s visit. The original Order in Council was strongly objected to by senators and MPs and who forced the Tories to back down. Trying again The Tories are trying again. What is at stake is the right [...]

Getting it wrong …and sometimes right-REACTIONS TO THE DEATH OF BILL C-43-Pro-lifers comment

Michel Arsenault of Life Savers, Moncton, N.B., stated the defeat “was rather nice.”  The bill would have allowed abortions on demand.  “Now we can work towards a law that really will protect both mother and unborn child.”  (The Times-Transcript) Bernard Currie, President of the Kitchener Right to Life, said there will be “mixed reactions…Some of our members have not been pleased with [...]

Flawed law in Utah

The Utah Senate approved a bill January 23, 1991, outlawing abortion ‘except incases of rape, incest, effects to the child incompatible with sustained survival, and danger to the mother’s life.”  Penalties for illegal abortions range from one to fifteen years in prison. Despite the fatal flaws in this legislation, it is expected that the legislation will be challenged in the courts.  (Wanderer, [...]
