Vote pro-life

Our editorial in the May issue (in the mail now) encourages all social conservatives to put the abortion issue front-and-center when casting a ballot. We state: We must, therefore, lead where our leaders have failed. It is true that many courageous and committed politicians have fought the good fight, and have struggled for the pro-life cause with integrity and at great personal cost. [...]

Happy Easter everyone

Have a Happy Easter everyone. Yesterday we promised that we's post today the top 10 candidates we want to see lose. That will have to wait until next week as events took over my day in ways I did not anticipate. We'll also post most of our election coverage from the May issue (in the mail now) over the course of next week. Check back regularly for [...]

Canadian election campaign, day 27

There must be about ten days left in the campaign and the Tories must be ahead because the abortion card has been played with a vengeance. In short, a number of media outlets -- Sun News' David Akin, the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, CBC, Canadian Press, in total Google News lists more than 120 stories -- have covered the story about [...]

PP prez named to Time’s 100 most influential

Cecile Richards is president of Planned Parenthood and she's been everywhere in the media lately defending her organization against various criminal and ethics breaches as well as frantically responding to efforts in Congress to defund her organization. Such visibility is often mistaken for influence, and Time magazine (yes, it is still around)  has named Richards to their new list of the 100 most influential [...]

Canadian election, day 26

The first two stories appeared on the weekend. I apologize for our tardiness. We got the dead tree version of our paper out yesterday so there hasn't bee time to blog the past few days. On the weekend, former Liberal strategist Warren Kinsella had a column in the Toronto Sun that said if Stephen Harper wins with a majority, he'll radically change Canada. [...]

Canadian election, day 20

Toronto Star columnist Bob Hepburn writes about the Religious Right and how they are a "force" for the Conservatives. It is all meant to scare voters -- or at least those who read the Toronto Star.  You see, despite denying any intention to re-open issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage, Harper can't be trusted because he has the gall to employ a few [...]

Canadian election, day 19

Yesterday during the leaders debate, Gilles Duceppe brought up the issue of abortion, but Stephen Harper did not take the bait. Rather than reiterating his line about not intending to re-open the issue is he wins a majority -- and therefore risk alienating his social conservative base -- Harper talked about his crime agenda. As part of a weekly series at the [...]

Canadian election, day 18

Sadly but unsurprisingly there is nothing much to report from the daily campaign. That's probably because the leaders are focusing on tonight's leaders' debate. What are the odds that moral issues are raised tonight 1) by the moderator or 2) the Liberal or NDP leader as an attack on Stephen Harper's hidden agenda? By our (far from scientific) estimates, the latter is three times more [...]

Environmentalism as a religion

Here's a paper (pdf) on environmentalism as, if not a religion, a substitute for religion. We've written about this before -- here and here. As I noted last year, "similarities between old-time fundamentalist religion and new-age (even pantheistic) environmentalism is stunning."

Canadian election, day 17

The Montreal Gazette reports that Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe reiterates his support for separation of church and state. Asked about the case of Saguenay Mayor Jean Tremblay who has continued opening council meetings with a prayer despite a  Quebec Human Rights Tribunal ruling against him, Duceppe said religion is a private matter, although he maintained Tremblay also had a right to pursue [...]

Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms

John Carpay has started the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms. The JCCF was founded last year "for the purpose of advancing and promoting the core principles of freedom and equality through education and litigation." Here is the website. Here is our Q&A with Carpay. One of JCCF's board members, Daniel Santoro, is slated to argue the case of R. v. Gibbons before [...]

Canadian election, day 14

Earlier this week, the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada released its Election Kit. In it they offer information to churches about what they can and cannot do during an election -- there is a lot they can legally do which fulfills their Christian obligation to inform their flocks about the responsibility of casting an informed and conscientious ballot. In short, churches must not [...]

Washington shutdown: abortion line in the sand

Are Democrats threatening to close down the federal government because the Republicans won't fund the abortion industry? The New York Times suggests they might be: Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, offered a lengthier, scathing criticism of Mr. Boehner and House Republicans, accusing them of wanting to shut down the federal government by insisting on cutting funds for women’s heath services. [...]
