Suffer Well

Interim writer, Josie Luetke, Talk Turkey By Josie Luetke This past year has been a hard one for me, and, unsurprisingly, for most of the rest of the world. At my lowest moments, I considered whether there was a conflict between my professional life in the pro-life movement and my personal life. I was urging people to choose life whilst [...]

Greater love hath no man than this

By Josie Luetke Interim writer, Josie Luetke, Talk Turkey For days surrounding Derek Sloan’s removal from the Conservative caucus, I wrote lengthy rants on Facebook, my rage ignited in a way it hadn’t been for a while.  The excuse Erin O’Toole employed for seeking to eject him—accepting a donation from a white nationalist whose membership the party had also accepted—was [...]

Charity and clarity for the laity, please

BY JOSIE LUETKE Interim writer, Josie Luetke, Talk Turkey I’m writing this column for precisely the reason I didn’t want to: the information available on vaccines in general, and particularly the COVID-19 ones, is immensely confusing and contradictory (even without journeying down the rabbit hole into conspiracies about nanoparticles, cryptocurrency, and 5G antennas—don’t ask). If I had trouble sifting through [...]

A DNA error

By Josie Luetke I don’t think I can recall a single pro-choicer who opposes abortion in cases of fetal disability or deformity. Usually, that circumstance is one that, if anything, buttresses their pro-choice stance. Like rape, disability is used to convince themselves of their moral superiority for supporting abortion, despite its intrinsically distasteful nature. They simply want to spare others from suffering [...]

All knees and elbows

Interim writer, Josie Luetke, Talk Turkey By Josie Luetke René Descartes’ infamous adage “I think, therefore I am” at first strikes one as a basic philosophical tenet, its danger generally unnoticed, including by my younger, immature self. Consider, though, how it associates ‘I’ solely with one’s mind and not body, and casts everything but one’s subjective viewpoint into doubt. On [...]

Looking up — not left, right

Interim writer, Josie Luetke , Talk Turkey By Josie Luetke Being somewhat of a political nomad, I was eager to read James Mumford’s Vexed: Ethics Beyond Political Tribes, published just this year, precisely because it seemed it would affirm my choice of wandering in the (metaphorical) wilderness rather than buying into one of the flawed “package deals” on offer by [...]

The Holy Spectre haunting the movement

By Josie Luetke Shortly after I became involved in the pro-life movement, I became cognizant of the push by mostly younger members to secularize its branding, even though we were all Christian. Green as I was and enamored with the clarity of the science of when life begins and the simplicity of the philosophical arguments against abortion, I was sympathetic. Pro-life could [...]

Death for the prisoner, not for the patient?

By: Josie Luetke Interim writer, Josie Luetke, Talk Turkey Imagine a man on death row. Some of you probably support his being there, or at least raise no objection. Imagine that he has been fighting his impending execution for years when he learns he has terminal cancer. Suddenly, his will to live vanishes. To be spared the anguish of cancer, [...]

When police stop seeing persons

Talk Turkey Josie Luetke In early 2016, an Arizona police officer yelled highly confusing commands at a sobbing and terrified Daniel Shaver (who, as it turns out, was unarmed), warning him that if he made a mistake, he might die, and die he did. For the sake of this column, I rewatched the video of this incident, witnessing his body [...]

Why I will rank half my ballot

The Interim recently published an online opinion piece from former MP Brad Trost, titled, “Why I will rank my full ballot” (as well as my Campaign Life Coalition blogpost on the Conservative Party of Canada leadership race). As Trost considers Campaign Life Coalition a friend, so we consider him a friend. As I alluded to in my blog about the CPC leadership [...]

Only Sloan and Lewis

Only Sloan and Lewis deserve pro-life support Leslyn Lewis and Derek Sloan true conservatives for life. The only debates of the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) leadership race took place last Wednesday in French and last Thursday in English. If you’re a Conservative Party member, you’ve likely been bombarded with emails from all four candidates’ campaigns over the past few [...]

Beware COVID-19 misinformation

Talk Turkey Josie Luetke At the beginning of the year, it was fellow pro-lifers – more than anyone else – who were warning me about COVID-19. As recently as last month, these same pro-lifers were up in arms about the devastation the Chinese Communist Party had wreaked upon the world. Then, inexplicably, sometime between then and now, many (but not [...]

Red China: The saviour we didn’t know we needed

Talk Turkey Josie Luetke If the mainstream media treated Justin Trudeau the same way they treat Donald Trump, I wouldn’t need to remind you that Trudeau once responded that the national administration that he most admired was Red China’s because of how “their basic dictatorship” has grown their economy. You wouldn’t be allowed to forget. Over the past year, the [...]

Dismount the O’Toole train

On Super Tuesday II, I was watching the left-wing YouTube channel The Young Turks while primary results rolled in and I sat up when political pundit Krystal Ball joined the hosts. For some much-needed background, The Young Turks co-founder Cenk Uygur is also one of the founders of Justice Democrats, a political action committee committed to getting “progressives” like Bernie Sanders, Alexandria [...]

2018 CIHI abortion figures present unclear picture

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) released data tables on Jan. 23 indicating there were 85,195 reported abortions in 2018 – down from a reported 94,030 abortions in 2017. In response, Global News ran an article by Cassandra Szklarski with the headline: “Canadian clinics and hospitals performing fewer abortions, data suggests.” The same article was also published on various other websites [...]
