Catholic radio expands scope

A Toronto faith-based radio station, on which The Interim has a program, has had its application for a new specialty audio service approved by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. The commission released a statement on March 12 confirming that Radio Maria will be permitted to distribute its programming nationally on a digital basis. To this point, the station has been broadcasting [...]

Dangerous influence

The Right Rev. Michael Ingham, bishop of the Greater Vancouver Diocese of New Westminster, is on the rampage again, wading anew into the ongoing controversy of sexual ethics in the Anglican Church of Canada. In an address he gave in Ottawa on March 7, 2007, he said, “The Christian church has a deeply flawed understanding of sex that has led to morally [...]

Christianity offers us a truly richer life of joy

It is a rare event when the secular press carries a Christian conversion story. Such an event, therefore, should be given additional attention. On Jan. 27, Canada’s National Post carried Dawn Eden’s conversion story under the slightly indelicate title, “Between my sheets, a lonely world.” It is both heartwarming and heartrending. Coming home, at long last, to the Catholic church is always a [...]

New Toronto archbishop speaks to life and family

He is taking over the leadership of Canada’s largest English-speaking Catholic diocese – with some 1.7 million adherents, 225 parishes and four missions – at a pivotal time in this country’s history, when abortions now number over 100,000 yearly in Canada, same-sex “marriage” has been legalized, the traditional family is otherwise under assault by widespread divorce and co-habitation and pornography outsells Hollywood [...]

Anglican clerics continue to wrestle over homosexuality

A meeting of Anglican leaders in Der es Salaam, Tanzania, which sought to find common ground over the increasingly divisive issue of homosexuality, was overshadowed by a report in the London Times that some within the Anglican communion will unite with the Catholic church. In recent years, there has been a rift between orthodox Anglicans faithful to Scripture, mostly in the developing world, [...]

A leader in the biblical tradition

“Will the shofar be blown in the city and the populace will not tremble?” (Amos 3:6) When Rabbi Yehuda Levin blows the shofar at Washington’s annual March for Life, he is continuing a two-decade tradition there, initiated by Jews for Morality. And by using a ram’s horn on each anniversary of Roe v. Wade, he is also placing the pro-life cause within the [...]

Glory we could never imagine

The two young people would soon be married. Happiness flowed and joy, like a gentle fragrance, wafted into their thoughts many times a day. For like all such couples, they anticipated keenly the fruitful, happy life awaiting them. But massive change came hurtling their way. For the Father threw a cosmic curveball planned from all eternity into carefully laid human plans. The [...]

A Child is born

On Christmas night, the angels announced “good news of a great joy” to shepherds tending their flocks. The shepherds were told to look for a sign, a “baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger” (Lk 2:12). This was not a miraculous sign, but it was the only one they received –  and the only one they needed. The sight of [...]

Expunging Christianity

The Charter of Rights of 1982 continues to dismantle the last remnants of our Christian culture in Canada. On Sept. 22, the Quebec Tribunal of Human Rights ordered the City of Laval, a suburb north of Montreal, to stop the traditional practice of prayer before the monthly city meetings. Mayor Gilles Vaillancourt has continued this good tradition despite a citizen’s formal complain [...]

B.C. Anglican congregations lose appeal

After almost two years of waiting, six distressed Anglican congregations in the Diocese of New Westminster finally have learned that the Panel of Reference has rejected their appeal for protection under a jurisdiction completely free from their liberal diocesan bishop, Michael Ingham. Instead, the panel has recommended a temporary, arms-length relationship between Ingham and the nearly 3,000 church members. Archbishop of Canterbury [...]

Freedom of religion is imperiled

A Manitoba marriage commissioner who lost his licence last year when he refused to perform homosexual “marriages,” has taken his fight for religious freedom to the Court of Queen’s Bench. The province ordered Kevin Kisilowsky, 36, to conduct “marriage” ceremonies for same-sex couples or hand in his licence, under a 2004 policy adopted by the province following the legalization of homosexual “marriage.” [...]

Coulter, in new book, takes aim at the godless liberal-left

Godless: The Church of Liberalism by Ann Coulter (Crown Forum, $36.95, 308 pages) Review by Kathy Shaidle The Interim Those who object to U.S. conservative columnist Anne Coulter’s torture-all-prisoners punditry are like pre-teen boys griping that Gone With the Wind has “too much kissing.” That is, Coulter-haters suffer from genre dysphasia. The bestselling author is neither a journalist nor a scholar, so [...]
