Pope opposes abortion

Perth, Australia:  Pope John Paul II, at the close of his November 1986 Australian visit, once more condemned abortion as an “unspeakable crime.”  He also reiterated the Catholic Church’s opposition to contraception and sterilization.   He sounded a similar note in his talk to government leaders, telling them that one basis for civilization is ‘reverence for human life from the [...]

Catholic journal endorses abortion

The November issue of Vie Ouvrière, a monthly Quebec periodical published by the Quebec province of an international Catholic religious order, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, carries an editorial approving of abortion.   The editorial is part of a “dossier” on abortion, with a “pro” and “con” set of articles. The dossier is entitled “Abortion: beyond good and bad.”  The [...]

Pro-life is “inappropriate” or how the ministry of transportation stole Christmas.

All I wanted for Christmas was a licence plate. My own personalized licence plate. One that said “PRO-LYF.”  I figured since the car was used for pro-life business 90 per cent of the time anyway it might as well say so. I also figured out that since Ontario will only let you use six letters in your licence plate that [...]

Banning extra billing reduces abortions

Much ink is being spilled in the provincial and national press about fewer abortions in Alberta. Headline seekers such as Henry Morgentaler have come to town (Calgary), officiously offering “help” to resolve the problem.   Actually, there is no problem. Alberta Health Minister Mary Moore is merely enforcing the prohibition against extra-billing, refusing to allow exceptions for abortionists. He is [...]

They also ask that illegal abortion clinics [...]

NDP nominates gay activist

Toronto:  Gay activist and admitted homosexual John Campey won the NDP nomination in the new provincial riding of St. George-St. David in Toronto. The riding has a sizeable homosexual community. Campey, 29, took the vote 59-25 over his only opponent, lawyer Harry Kopyto. The NDP, the party most firmly committed to abortion on demand, both in Ontario and nation-wide, also [...]

Activism and prayer

Being a pro-life activist isn’t easy. No matter what occupation you’re involved in, there are always those days when you feel like you can’t get out of bed in the morning. Yet, in a particular way, this can be even more true for those of us who work fulltime for the pro-life cause. Some days you want to give [...]

More looking back at 1986

Pro-abortion politicians can’t escape pro-life protests   Pro-life people in record numbers were out picketing pro-abortion politicians last year. Ontario’s Premier David Peterson and his Attorney General Ian Scott were the objects of special attention for their willingness to pervert the justice system in Ontario in order to allow the continued operation of the illegal abortuaries in the province. At times, [...]

Lawyer advocates Nazi-style killing

“History is bunk,” so said Henry Ford. A much wiser man warned that those who refuse to learn from the experience of history are doomed to repeat it, and two recent publications bear witness to the bitter truth of this warning. The Nazi Doctors: Medical Killing and the Psychology of Genocide by Robert Jay Lifton traces the steps by [...]

Attacked Again

Campaign Life has issued a second formal complaint against the Globe and Mail. It has also complained about the conduct of Council secretary, Fraser MacDougall, whose personal intervention affected the Globe’s publication of the recent adjudication in Campaign Life’s facour.   As a member of the Press Council the Globe was required to publish the Council’s adjudication of Campaign [...]

1986 – Looking back

Clergymen stand up for life   It was the year that three clergymen stood up for life – even at the risk of going to jail. It was the year that three clergymen with padlocks were vindicated by the courts. Pastor Fred Vaughan, and Fathers Ted Colleton and Alphonse De Valk were charged with mischief for having padlocked the back [...]

Vigil on Harbord Street

Just two days after the Immaculate Conception of Mary, people from all over Ontario gathered for an anniversary vigil in Toronto. On December 10, they came to 85 Harbord Street, two years to the day on which the abortuary opened its door for business. On my way to the 24-hour prayer vigil. The word “morgue,” as in Morgentaler, kept cropping up in [...]

Pro-lifers took to the streets

Pro-lifers across Canada took to the streets on several occasions in May.  In addition to the traditional Mother’s Day rallies on May 11, hospital vigils were held on May 14. The May 14 evening demonstrations were co-ordinated by Alliance for Life, the umbrella organization of the pro-life education movement.  Pro-lifers from British Columbia to Newfoundland picketed abortion-providing hospitals to mark the anniversary [...]

International- Abortion picketer is prisoner on conscience

Holmesberg Prison. 16th November 1985 Dear Sara So here I am, immured in an imitation Tower of London, in a filthy, sunless cell! – Holmesburg County prison here in my native city and country of Philadelphia. I shall have to return to Pittsburgh at the end of next week after our trial here. I believe I dropped a note to you in [...]
